🦋 Monarch Watch at SMEP! 🦋

This past Saturday, our Newburgh Naturalists, Wild Readers, and Garden classes took part in the Watch Tagging Project!

As monarch butterflies begin their incredible migration to Mexico, our SMEP students and families had the opportunity to become citizen scientists and learn how researchers collect important data about monarch migration. 🔬🌎

Throughout the morning, participants learned about the Monarch Watch project, enjoyed an interactive read-aloud, and observed the tagging process firsthand. Students and families watched as the butterflies were identified, their wings were measured, tiny tracking tags were carefully applied, and the monarchs were released into our garden to continue their journey south. 🦋🌼

This marks the second year our SMEP community has participated in Monarch Watch, a project that is now in its 35th year!

We are so grateful to our instructors for creating hands-on learning experiences like this for our children and families. It was a beautiful day of science, literacy, nature, and community! 💙

What a great first Saturday of our Fall session! 🎉💙 Thank you to all our families, volunteers, and instructors for making it a wonderful start!

A few reminders for our NAUC families:

🎟️ Parent badges: Thank you for your patience! They weren’t ready this weekend, but we expect to have them available next Saturday.

👕 Need a bigger shirt? Bring your child’s outgrown NAUC shirt to the Larkin Center next Saturday to exchange it for a larger size.

👨‍👩‍👧 We are not a drop-off program. All parents/guardians must remain on-site. Please stay with your children, especially those under age 9, and help them get from class to class. With so much happening, little ones can easily get lost or feel overwhelmed.

🖍️ Pre-K and Kindergarten parents: Your participation is required! Please sit with your child and help them through class activities.

📚 Make reading part of your Saturday! Stop by our library and check out a book each week.

💻 We’ll also be hosting a virtual information and Q&A session this week. Stay tuned for details!

See you next Saturday! 💙

May we honor their memory through kindness, service, and care for one another. 🇺🇸
