🔥 CLEAN YOUR DRYER VENT THIS WEEKEND 🔥

Did you know that clogged dryer vents are one of the leading causes of home fires? Lint buildup restricts airflow, causes overheating, and can ignite inside the vent system. The Ohio Township Fire Department reminds residents to take a few minutes this weekend for a simple but important safety task.

🧺 DRYER VENT SAFETY CHECKLIST:
✅ Clean the lint trap before and after every load
✅ Disconnect and vacuum behind the dryer regularly
✅ Inspect and clean the dryer vent duct at least once a year
✅ Make sure exterior vent openings are clear and functioning properly
✅ Watch for warning signs: longer drying times, burning smell, or excessive heat

⚠️ If your dryer is working harder than usual, it may already be a fire risk. A clean vent helps your dryer run efficiently and keeps your home safer.

As temperatures rise, more people are heading to local rivers, lakes, and waterways. Please keep water rescue and boating safety a top priority this season.

🚨 Boating Safety Tips:
- Always wear a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jacket
- Never operate a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Check weather conditions before heading out
- File a float plan—let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll return
- Keep safety equipment onboard (whistle, throw rope, flashlight, first aid kit)
- Complete a boater safety course, so you are familiar with boating regulations

🌊 Water Safety Reminders:
- Never swim alone or in unfamiliar areas
- Stay away from strong currents, drop-offs, and dam spillways
- Supervise children closely near water at all times
- If you fall into the water, stay calm, float, and signal for help

Water emergencies happen quickly—preparedness saves lives. Let’s work together to keep our waterways safe for everyone.

🚨 Why Response Times Matter 🚨

Every second counts in an emergency. When someone calls 911, the time it takes for firefighters and EMS to arrive can make the difference between a small, manageable incident and a life-threatening situation.

At the Ohio Township Fire Department, we train daily to respond quickly and efficiently—but response time isn’t about us. IT'S ABOUT YOU!

Our performance objectives for:

"Turnout Time" (time elapsed between Dispatch notifying firefighters of the emergency and when the emergency response unit begins travel):
🚑 EMS incidents, our crews should respond within 60 seconds
🚒 Non-EMS incidents, our crews should respond within 80 seconds
(The reason for the extra 20 seconds is to allow for our firefighters to get into their structural turnout gear)

"Response Time" (time elapsed between the dispatch center dispatching the alarm and the arrival of the first emergency response unit):
➡ NFPA 1710 allows for 5 minutes and 20 seconds
➡ Our goal is four minutes or less

In 2025, our average response time for 2,120 incidents, was 5 minutes and 19 seconds. This was primarily from Station 1 on Libbert Road, covering the 44 square miles.

Here’s how you can help improve response times in your community:
- Make sure your address is clearly visible from the road, day and night
- Keep driveways and access roads clear for emergency vehicles
- Secure pets so responders can enter safely and quickly
- Teach children how and when to call 911
- Ensure someone in your home can clearly communicate your location in an emergency

According to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), faster response times significantly improve survival rates in fire and medical emergencies. Seconds matter—and preparation saves time.

We are proud to serve and protect Ohio Township, but we need your partnership to do it as quickly and safely as possible.

🔥 GRILL SAFETY: KEEP KIDS SAFE AROUND THE BBQ 🔥

Grilling season is a great time for family and friends — but grills can stay dangerously hot long after the food is done cooking. Children can suffer serious burns in just seconds.

👨‍🚒 Ohio Township Fire Department reminds families to follow these simple grill safety tips:
✅ Create a “kid-free zone” at least 3 feet around the grill
✅ Never allow children to play near grills, propane tanks, or lighter fluid
✅ Keep hot foods and drinks away from table edges
✅ Turn pot and pan handles inward on side burners
✅ Supervise children closely anytime grilling is taking place
✅ Allow grills and ashes to cool completely before touching or cleaning

⚠️ Gas grills, charcoal grills, and fire pits can all cause severe burns. Even a quick touch can result in injury.

Teach kids:
🚫 “Stop — don’t touch!” around anything hot outdoors.

A few seconds of prevention can prevent a lifetime injury.

🔥 GRILL SAFETY & BURN PREVENTION 🍔🌭

Warmer weather means grilling season is here! Before firing up the grill, take a few simple steps to help prevent fires and burn injuries.

✅ Place grills at least 10 feet away from homes, decks, siding, and overhangs
✅ Never use grills inside garages, enclosed porches, or under balconies
✅ Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the grilling area
✅ Never leave a grill unattended while cooking
✅ Check propane tanks and connections for leaks before use
✅ Clean grease and fat buildup from grills regularly
✅ Keep a fire extinguisher or garden hose nearby
✅ Use long-handled grilling tools to reduce burn risk
✅ Allow coals and grills to cool completely before disposal or storage

⚠️ If a grease fire occurs:
• Never use water on a grease fire
• Turn off the burner if safe to do so
• Close the grill lid to help smother the flames
• Call 911 if the fire spreads or cannot be controlled

Burn injuries can happen quickly. Stay alert and make safety part of every cookout.
