Today’s speaker, Jennifer Childress of Lampion Center, shared their mission and stories of them serving children in our community at our GRK meeting early this morning. We also heard Todd Krampitz, our own member, tell how he found his calling with the little library we started at the Caldwell CenterPoint YMCA. He now distributes books to numerous agencies and schools. A chance encounter in the Smokey Mtns left him one degree of separation from Dolly Parton, and they both share a love of literacy. Join us next week for the Firefighter if the Year Award!

Evansville Mayor, Stephanie Terry, was our guest presenter this morning. As Mayor, she has placed an increased emphasis on the people and places of Evansville. In her first proposed budget, Mayor Terry advocated for the largest raise in more than a decade for all city employees, while also proposing significant investments in neighborhood revitalization by investing in the Affordable Housing Trust Fund, land acquisition, the Land Bank, and maintenance of Evansville’s Department of Parks & Recreation. Mayor Terry has received numerous awards over the years, but she is most proud of having been named the 2020 Athena Non-profit Professional of the Year by the Southwest Indiana Chamber (now E-REP); the 2020 Soror of the Year by the Midwest Region of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority; 2020 YWCA Woman on a Mission Award; the 2021 William G. and Rose M. Mays Legacy Award from the University of Evansville; and the 2024 Sara B. Davies Visionary Award from Leadership Everyone. Mayor Terry is a life-long resident of Evansville.

During Mayor Terry’s first term, she has launched several childrens programs in Evansville - “We Read”, Summer Ride, food insecurity, improved affordable housing, and more. She has been intentional in selecting partners that will assist the city in choosing projects/programs that will improve our community.
The Mayor works closely with other mayors and town managers to learn best practices, and to show a unified front with state and federal governments to do what’s best for Evansville. She has been busy in the first half of her term!

Following the presentation, GRK Members were updates on Dinner Night Out, BBQ Sales, Circle K, Harrison HS Key Club Spring Basket Delivery, Y&E postponement, Riley Comfort Cart, and more.

Several Green River Kiwanians volunteered at the Annual Maple Sugarbush Festival at Evansville’s Wesselman Woods. GRK had volunteers fixing pancakes and sausage, pouring drinks, washing dishes, and manning some of the nature educational sites. You never know who you might see there. Owlfred became a good friend to Martha while she was working at the registration table!

Cheryl Schauberger, Little Lambs, Board member and Treasurer, was the guest presenter at the Green River Kiwanis meeting this morning. Since 1995, Little Lambs has helped safeguard the health and well-being of our youngest and most vulnerable citizens, infants and young children. Little Lambs has accomplished this indirectly, but effectively, by creating alliances with professional organizations that provide prenatal and pediatric care, behavioral services, nutrition, drug and alcohol education and rehabilitation, and more. When parents obtain services from partnering organizations, they are rewarded for positive acts on behalf of their children with vouchers that they can be traded for baby and child items offered through the Little Lambs store, located inside the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Evansville. The store carries car seats, pack n plays, strollers, safety gates, diapers, breastfeeding supplies, baby bottles, sippy cups, clothing, and more. Little Lambs is also a Child Passenger Safety Inspection Station and offers a Safe Sleep Program. Little Lambs is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. 994 families were served last year; 511 familes were first time guests. The organization is always looking for board members and volunteers. If you would like to learn more, please visit https://littlelambsevansville.com/
