What brings someone to hospice care, and what makes them stay? ๐Ÿ’š

We asked Monica Perez, LPN, and Andrew Stuchiner, BSN, RN, and Chief Clinical & Operating Officer, to share what inspired them to do this work and what they love most about caring for patients and families.

Their answers say it better than we ever could. ๐Ÿค—

๐Ÿ’š Volunteer Spotlight: Pilar Treus

After witnessing the kindness, compassion, and attention Hospice provided while caring for her mother, Pilar knew she wanted to give back in a meaningful way. What started as an expression of gratitude has grown into nearly five years of service supporting patients and families in our community, at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence, and through our bereavement program.

A retired teacher who speaks several languages, including Spanish, Pilar helps reflect the diversity of the community we serve and brings warmth, understanding, and connection to those she meets.

โ€œVisiting with patientsโ€™ families who may be experiencing a very difficult time in their lives continues to open my heart and allows me to offer empathy and a compassionate presence.โ€

Pilar describes her volunteer experience as a source of sharing, openheartedness, growth, and purpose. Her story is a beautiful reminder that sometimes the smallest acts of kindness can have the greatest impact.

๐Ÿ’š Volunteer Spotlight: Rafael Colon ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Meet Rafael Colon, a U.S. Air Force Veteran, retired NYPD officer, community leader, and one of our dedicated Veteran volunteers at Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties.

For Rafael, volunteering is about connection. Through conversations, companionship, and shared experiences, he helps fellow Veterans feel seen, heard, and supported during lifeโ€™s most important moments.

โ€œEvery Veteran patient I have visited has been grateful to have someone come and sit with them. They immediately go into stories from the service, and they smile and their eyes light up.โ€

Through our We Honor Veterans initiatives, volunteers like Rafael help ensure no Veteran walks this journey alone.

We are currently looking for more Veteran volunteers to join this meaningful work. If youโ€™ve served and want to support fellow Veterans through companionship and connection, we would love to hear from you.

Some moments in life call for more support than can be provided at home. When that time comes, families deserve a place that feels less like a facility and more like a place of comfort, peace, and compassion.

The Kaplan Family Hospice Residence, operated by Hospice of Orange & Sullivan, provides a peaceful, home-like setting where patients and families can receive the support they need during life's final chapter.

Located in Newburgh, the residence offers private rooms, welcoming spaces for family and friends, unlimited visiting hours, and around-the-clock care from an experienced interdisciplinary team.

Whether a patient's needs have become too complex to manage at home or a family needs additional support during the final stages of life, the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence provides a place where comfort, symptom management, and meaningful moments remain the focus.

One family member shared how Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties became a source of support, comfort, and guidance during a difficult chapter, not only through professional care but through kindness, compassion, and presence.

For many families, hospice care becomes more than services and visits. It becomes a connection, a reassurance, and a source of support when itโ€™s needed most.
