Holidays for children are just as stressful as they are exciting and fun! Here's how to help your child reduce their stress while supporting their mental health:
π¦ Include them in the chaos of activities: preparing meals, baking, wrapping gifts, decorating, etc.
π¦ Keep their routine as best as you can. Many families travel to many different places over the course of a few days to see family + friends. Sleep is critical for a child to self-regulate and their bedtime/naptime routine is part of that.
π¦ Your child can feel your stress + tension: model healthy coping skills. Take a break and inhale some fresh air in a quiet spot outdoors. You may find that your child becomes over-stimulated and needs a quiet corner and time with only you.
π¦ Expectations can be our enemy causing excessive stress, tension, anger, and so much more. Be realistic about what your finances allow, what your family needs vs. wants, and with your time and commitments.
π¦ With all of the hustle and bustle of our ever-growing commercialized holidays, make time to help your child practice gratitude and kindness.
π¦ Lastly - remember to laugh and have fun! Your time and healthy, positive memories are the best gifts you can give your child.
