When the new Wakonda buildings were in their inspiration stage, their loose Frank Loyd Wright style drew an off-handed comment by Camp Business Director, Caitlin Voyt; they "should include stained glass". That inspiration brought a response from yours truly and three friends from which a community art project was started. Sixteen glass-on-glass panels were created thanks to the generous donation of glass by Ruth Knoll, and community and alumni volunteers who came together over a span of three years.. and here's the beautiful results!

Yesterday's Tuesday with Jane failed to post, so let's try it again today!

In 1966, another outpost unit; "Wakonda" (for High School girls) was established with 2 large camper tents and a counselor tent for 10th grade campers. This group of girls was always known for their sense of challenge - building lashed tables and benches, and even an off-site camp called the "Wakondaminiums" in the 1980s. Today, that sense of adventure lives on in the new post-and-beam platform open-air buildings added in 2022. An added feature is the 16 stained glass mosaics depicting the four seasons - stay tuned to next week's post to learn more about them!

Tinuwen was established in 1961 as Camp enrollment was increasing and the high school girls needed more space to allow more girls to attend Camp. A new living unit with platform tents was established. The immediate question is always; "where did the name come from?" Leave it to the teenagers and their counselor, Carol Fisher to rise to the occasion and pick TINUWEN (Spoiler alert - "new unit," spelled backwards!) In 1983, the current buildings were constructed as the Tinuwen Treehouses with Camp's first lowropes elements of a floating balence beam and climbing cargo net.

Between touring camp, shooting archery, climbing, and getting out on the lake--everyone was getting in a summer state of mind.
Temperatures in the 70s and s'mores didn't hurt 😁
