NEWARK COMMUNITY STREET TEAM

COME IN PEACE, LIVE IN PEACE

NCST treats violence like a disease and uses public health strategies to control the spread of violence. OUTREACH: The program sends Outreach Workers and Violence Interrupters into the community where they engage men and women who are at risk of perpetrating or being victimized by violence. The staff, who all have intimate knowledge o

f life on the streets, serve as peer counselors by offering advice and guidance on how to respond to conflicts without
violence. They use positive peer pressure to redirect high risk individuals towards school or jobs and help them think and behave differently about violence. staff and community volunteers distribute palm cards and posters with message that promote peace and alternatives to violence. Merchants have signs in their windows counting the number of days since the last shooting in the neighborhood. COMMUNITY MOBILIZATION: N.C.S.T. works with a wide range of community partners who seek to spread an anti-violence message. organizes street fairs, concerts, “ speak outs” and social activities that advance one simple idea: our community is moving past gun violence. USE OF DATA: N.C.S.T. uses a data to identify neighborhood “hotzones” and the times of day and days of week that shootings occur. This allows resources to be focused most effectively to help the community move past gun violence.

We conducted a community walk along South 16th Street between Madison Avenue and Clinton Avenue. During this time, we went door-to-door, providing resources to families and engaging residents about available services and upcoming events.
We received strong community support, with more than half of the block expressing interest in and support for our upcoming Heal the Block event. The level of engagement was outstanding and reflects the community’s willingness to connect and participate.
