During 2012, The Newark Young Adult Pre-Apprenticeship Program was created
and developed by Stephanie Harris-Kuiper, Executive Director, New Jersey Health Care Employers, District 1199J Training & Development Fund. A proposal was then submitted, approved and funded by the City of Newark's One Stop during 2013. The NYAPP program's mission is to recruit, accept, educate, train, mentor and place 15 Newark youth into health care and other high growth / high demand occupations. Recruitment efforts consist of working with Newark Youth One-Stop, Newark high schools and community-based organizations. The pre-apprenticeship program includes a 12-week intensive academic enrichment (240 hours) and work-readiness training (120 hours). Intensive academic enrichment includes reading comprehension, English grammar, writing skills and mathematics. Work-readiness includes various skills, development for employment preparation. Employment skills include personal / interpersonal communication, resume and cover letter writing, interview questions / responses, dressing for success, work etiquette, skills for remaining employment and job advancement. A series of work-readiness workshops are facilitated by healthcare and business professionals within the Greater-Newark area. Mentors within health care and other high growth industries are recruited and trained to mentor NYAPP students. Mentors serve as role-models and when possible provide job-shadowing opportunities. Upon successful completion of NYAPP, graduates are placed into entry-level employment with District 1199J affiliated employers and other Greater-Newark employers. NYAPP is held Monday through Friday, 9:00am until 3:30pm, five days per week (total of 360 hours). Location of NYAPP is held at 9-25 Alling Street, Newark, NJ. After job placement, graduates continue to receive invitations to attend career workshops and trainings.
