American Society of Civil Engineers - NJIT

American Society of Civil Engineers - NJIT The official page for the ASCE student chapter of NJIT. Friendships and professional contacts made during social events can – and do – last for a lifetime.

The ASCE Chapter of NJIT is a proactive organization that provides Civil Engineering students with the opportunity to become active in the school and the community. Some of the things that we get involved with are intercollegiate competitions, community service, and various social activities. Furthermore the society helps to enrich the students’ knowledge of the professional environment through sp

eaker presentations, workshops or seminars, and field trips. There are many scholarships available for members to further enhance their educational experience.

-Intercollegiate competitions

ASCE Student Chapter/Club competitions provide a creative outlet from the demands of your classes and allow you to practice your technical skills on unique projects. Build, design and race in concrete canoes or construct a 20-foot long steel bridge and observe how well it withstands various loads. Participate in balsa wood building challenges.

-Scholarships/Fellowships

ASCE awards over $75,000 annually in student scholarships, fellowships and prizes. We have a range of scholarships available for freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students to apply for.

-Workshops and Leadership

ASCE Student Chapter/Club members, Faculty Advisors and Contact Members are invited to attend the annual Workshops for Student Chapter Leaders (WSCL). The WSCL events provide an excellent forum for networking and making contacts with hundreds of other students and civil engineering professionals from all parts of the country. In addition to providing renowned speakers, the workshops include brainstorming and goal setting sessions, group discussions and projects, career seminars, and meetings with ASCE National and local leaders.

-Field Trips

Many Chapters/Clubs sponsor guided field trips to significant engineering projects, some of which are under construction and closed to the public. Visits to major projects already in operation may be conducted by practicing engineers who share and explain the details of their work. Upcoming field trips include the MOLES trip in Manhattan,……………

-Community Service

One of the objectives of ASCE is the promotion of the civil engineering profession to enhance the welfare of humanity. ASCE Student Chapters/Clubs strive to organize public service projects where students apply their classroom skills to real life situations which will make a positive contribution to the community. Students participate in projects such as designing an emergency vehicle bridge spanning over 130 feet………………..

-Social Activities

Sporting events, parties, happy hours, study groups, and informal gatherings are also a part of ASCE.

The American Society of Civil Engineers and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers have teamed up to host a toy drive for kids this semester. These toys will be donated to kids housed in violent free agencies. So, we ask that there are no toy guns or any type of violent toys given to the children. If you would like to donate toys or lightly worn coats, please drop it off in one of our boxes.

“I used to work as civil engineer in Nepal. I worked on government projects: bridges, roads, things like that. But I was sitting in my office one day in 2004, watching television coverage of the tsunami that hit Indonesia, and I realized that government work was not the best use of my abilities. So I joined the UN and helped build 380 schools in Indonesia. Then when the earthquake hit Haiti, I moved there and began building shelters. Any engineer could do this work. But there just weren’t many available. So all I did was make myself available. Now I’m working with the UNHCR to construct camps for refugees. The first priorities are basics: shelter, health, food, water, and toilet access. My next priority is to respect the dignity of the refugees. When they arrive, they are very anxious, so I want to make sure they feel like they have a place. We leave four meters of space between every tent. We also leave the camp open so they can enter and leave whenever they like. And I added this cover over the entry way, because I wanted to be sure they were shaded the moment they walk in.” (Lesvos, Greece)
