Today, we’re shining the spotlight on Helen Hall, our Office Manager, one of the many people who help make St. Vincent Haven a place of hope, stability, and new beginnings. ❤️

Helen’s journey to The Haven is a story of faith, community, and what she calls divine intervention. A Brooklyn, New York native who also spent years in South Florida, Helen never imagined she would find herself in Newark, Ohio. But after meeting her husband, Jeff, and moving to Newark with their son, she became deeply connected to the community.

With Jeff serving as Newark’s mayor for more than 14 years, Helen has had a front-row seat to the people, places, and stories that make Newark and Licking County special. In her free time (lol!), she serves as an officer of the Newark Elks Lodge, focusing this year on Veteran and Americanism projects in local schools and throughout the community.

At The Haven, Helen provides essential support to our leadership, Board, and staff—handling everything from purchasing and human resources to organizing supplies and keeping our operations running smoothly. Since joining The Haven in April 2024, she says there hasn’t been a day when she hasn’t learned something new!

So why The Haven?

“Actually, The Haven chose me!”

Helen believes there was divine intervention in the opportunity that brought her through our doors. And once she became part of the team, she quickly discovered just how meaningful the mission truly is.

One of Helen’s favorite parts of her job is witnessing those moments when a resident’s face lights up after getting a new job or signing a lease for his own apartment.

“You just can’t help but feel joy knowing you were part of the process.”

We couldn’t agree more. ❤️

Helen, thank you for the dedication, heart, and behind-the-scenes work you bring to St. Vincent Haven every day. We are grateful to have you as part of the Haven family!

Welcome, Ben Shirley!

We’re blessed to welcome Ben Shirley to the St. Vincent Haven team as our new Community Navigator!

In this important role, Ben will collaborate with organizations and community partners across Licking County to advocate for people experiencing homelessness and help connect them with the services, resources, and support they need.

This work is about building bridges—between people and resources, between organizations and one another, and ultimately between individuals experiencing homelessness and a path toward home.

The Community Navigator initiative was made possible through a generous grant from the Licking County Foundation. We are deeply grateful to the Foundation and to the entire community whose support makes this critical work possible.

Welcome to the Haven team, Ben! We’re grateful to have you with us.

An Unreasonable Encourager: This Life Was Not Meant to Be Lived Alone

Good morning, precious friends!

Today, I’m filled with gratitude as I reflect on the gifts of each new day. This morning, the Holy Spirit woke me up early, reminding me of a lesson I’ve been learning: that the time I’ve set aside before my shifts at St. Vincent Haven isn’t just about being on time for work—it's a sacred time to connect with our Lord in the chapel. “This is the day that the Lord has made; I will rejoice and be glad in it.” What an honor it is to share my faith and to have a heart of thanksgiving!

For over three years, I’ve served as a Resident Specialist at St. Vincent Haven. And I can truly say that not one day has been the same. This work is my purpose—something I can’t imagine living without. Each day, I begin and end in the chapel, a place dedicated to Saint Dismas, the good thief who turned to Christ in his final moments. His story speaks volumes: it’s never too late to do good, and every situation presents an opportunity for growth.

At dinner each evening, I invite the men to join me in praying the Lord’s Prayer. It’s not a requirement, but rather an invitation into a conversation with the Lord—a chance to create a space where we all feel the love and support we often need.

I carry the mindset of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society: to respect each person with dignity and to want the best for others. I truly believe that God has a plan for every man who walks through our doors. My mission is to be an unreasonable encourager, focusing on progress, not perfection. I strive to support each man on his journey toward sustainable independence, showing them that the struggles of addiction and homelessness can be overcome.

I’ve learned so much from the men I serve—every one of them is fighting a battle I might not fully understand, but I’m here to walk alongside them as an equal, not as an authority. I believe accountability must be rooted in tenderness, helping them see that this life was never meant to be walked alone. Together, we can rebuild broken relationships and trust in one another again.

It's not about depending solely on programs or systems, but about becoming the men God intended us to be—a future filled with hope and possibilities. It all begins with kindness, a good meal, a safe place to rest, and an open heart ready to listen.

Above all, I want every man at the haven to know one undeniable truth: that he is loved.

At St. Vincent Haven, we strive to embrace the beautiful principle: "To will the good of another, for the sake of the other." It is a way of life rooted in Christ's call to love, and it challenges each of us to choose kindness, even when no one is watching.

The Harvey Family is a remarkable example of that love in action. Through their generosity, encouragement, and unwavering support, they continue to lift up the mission of St. Vincent Haven and the men we serve. Their kindness is not measured only by the gifts they give, but by the HOPE they inspire!

We are especially grateful to the Hope Timber Companies and the entire Harvey family for standing beside us once again—first as a Platinum Sponsor of our recent St. Vincent Haven Charity Golf Outing, and now as a Premier Sponsor of our upcoming Fall Fling. Your partnership is making a lasting difference in the lives of men experiencing homelessness, helping them find stability, healing, and a place to call home.

"Let all that you do be done in love." — 1 Corinthians 16:14

Harvey family and Hope Timber, thank you for showing what it looks like to put faith into action. Thank you for choosing kindness. Thank you for willing the good of others. May God continue to bless your family, your business, and the many lives you touch through your generosity.
