Building a Strong Advocacy Group For Grandparent Led Families. The inception of the GrandPower Association began near the end of 2003. Edwin Haig and Ms. Denise Dean had noticed that the group of grandparents meeting at the Salvation Army were becoming divided and felt more should be done to keep grandparents in the program involved with each other. Dean was involved with other grandparent associa

tions, but nothing was getting accomplished. Haig and Ms. Dean discussed on several occasions organizing a meeting to bring all the grandparents together. On March 27, 2004, a meeting was held with Mrs. Elizabeth Morris, Mrs. Dean to address some problems Ms. Dean had encountered trying to care for her grandson. As a result of that meeting, twenty-five grandparents attended a court hearing for her to maintain custody of her grandson. Haig passed away a week afer the March 27th meeting. After the shock of her passing was over, Denise Dean recruited other grandparents for a meeting and that is when GRANDPOWER began to be formulated as an organization. Our Accomplishments:

Rallied at Trenton, Newark City Hall, Department of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) and Essex County Welfare to protest unfairness towards caregivers of related children. Community Partner of Newark Now, Vision of Hope and Quest Ink, Inc. Awarded Newark Now's Spririt of Newark Award in 2006. Volunteered on Kinship Navigators program for the State of New Jersey. Hosted 1st Annual Salute to Grandparents October 2007. Holiday food packages distribution to member families.
