Today I had the pleasure of speaking with Mr. Howard Schaneman, who was a camper & staff member at Mohican in the 1960s. He shared memories about Scouting, and about what Scouting teaches a person.

Howie was a member of Troop 104, Vailsburg, which met at the Beth David Jewish Center. Thank you for sharing your memories, Howie!

Newark's Historic Robert Treat Scouting District's City-Wide Court of Honor: March 12, 2009. Thanks to then-Mayor Cory Booker, City Council President Mildred Crump, and so many others for putting the City's beautiful headquarters at the disposal of one of the centers of American Scouting renewal in the 21st century. Speakers included volunteer leaders Tony Oliviera, Tyrone Brooks & Ganesh Harishkrishnan. Enjoy the subsequent videos that display the evening's program.

These are the clever guys who, three years later at 11 years old, left for a five-week Academic Residential Scout Summer Camp experience at Ten Mile River Scout Camps on July 10, 2011. In addition to moving ahead about a grade level in math, reading & writing, they earned more than 20 merit badges, learned to swim, paddle a canoe, got mohawk haircuts, observed a full moon cycle, and cooked almost all their own meals over fires they built themselves. As makes plenty of sense, two of them ultimately found high school summer employment at a sleep-away summer camp! See post below to join in a mini-reunion.
