New Community Corporation

New Community Corporation NCC is one of the largest, most comprehensive community development organizations in the U.S.

In 1967, a rebellion tore through Newark’s Central Ward in response to years of racially targeted discrimination, economic disinvestment, political disenfranchisement and police brutality—issues that resonate in today’s political climate. But while New Community was born in 1968 from the ashes of racism, poverty and despair, its essence was deeply rooted in the strength, resolve and dedication of

men and women, Newark residents, to help themselves improve the quality of their lives and their community. Today, New Community Corporation is recognized as one of the largest, most comprehensive community development corporations in the U.S. We have been at the vanguard of providing safe, decent and attractive housing for low-income residents for more than 50 years. Our vast array of services are provided under a comprehensive network and reach every stage of life. We offer a one-stop resource center, early childhood education, youth services, workforce training, adult continuing education, family transitional housing, food pantry, mental health services, extended care for seniors, a community newsletter and arts and cultural events.

New Community President and CEO Simone Gagneron joined industry leaders Aug. 5 for a Bisnow panel discussion exploring how resident needs and community context can shape affordable housing design, construction, and preservation strategies.

At New Community, we believe successful developments begin with listening to residents, analyzing neighborhood conditions, and understanding the barriers families encounter to long-term stability. These insights shape not only the physical design of the buildings, but the services and amenities that help residents become self-sufficient.

New Community’s newest development, The Morris, is a powerful example of that approach. The 120-unit affordable housing community was shaped in part by input from residents who identified priorities including spaces to gather, safe places for children, access to technology and opportunities to build financial stability.

The result will include approximately 4,000 square feet of community space, along with services and programming supported by partnerships with local health care, library, arts and cultural organizations. Our own Federal Credit Union will connect families with financial services and pathways toward homeownership.

We’re proud to have Simone bring New Community’s perspective to this important conversation and to continue advocating for affordable housing that strengthens residents and neighborhoods.

As part of this partnership, Newark police officers will conduct daily patrols at several New Community properties, and the Newark Emergency Services Unit will work with our program leaders to conduct emergency preparedness drills.

We are grateful to the Newark Police Department for its continued partnership and commitment to the safety of our residents, staff and community.
