In 1967, a rebellion tore through Newark’s Central Ward in response to years of racially targeted discrimination, economic disinvestment, political disenfranchisement and police brutality—issues that resonate in today’s political climate. But while New Community was born in 1968 from the ashes of racism, poverty and despair, its essence was deeply rooted in the strength, resolve and dedication of
men and women, Newark residents, to help themselves improve the quality of their lives and their community. Today, New Community Corporation is recognized as one of the largest, most comprehensive community development corporations in the U.S. We have been at the vanguard of providing safe, decent and attractive housing for low-income residents for more than 50 years. Our vast array of services are provided under a comprehensive network and reach every stage of life. We offer a one-stop resource center, early childhood education, youth services, workforce training, adult continuing education, family transitional housing, food pantry, mental health services, extended care for seniors, a community newsletter and arts and cultural events.
