The Newark Chess Club is a 501(c)3 nonprofit mentorship program founded in 2009 in Newark New Jersey. Our mission is to transform lives by building critical thinking skills and character in children. We use chess as the bonding activity to build a lasting relationship between a mentor and a mentee, and we use chess to teach children how to make better decisions. Our goal is to teach every child in
Newark how to play chess and to make sure that every child has a mentor. We have developed a curriculum for children that cultivates life skills such as goal setting, patience, planning, strategy, overcoming peer pressure, focus, creating advantages, using your instincts, persistence, determination, understanding the consequences of actions, overcoming challenges, keeping commitments, trust, respect, and choices. Within the city, we have partnered with the City of Newark, Newark Public Schools, Leaders for Life, the Boys and Girls Club of Newark, Newark Mentoring Movement, Jersey Cares, After School All Stars, Military Park Partnership, Riverfront Park Revival, the New Jersey Institute of Technology, and several other institutions and organizations that are working to improve the lives of our youth. Each year, we hold at least 4 large chess tournaments for middle and high school students and the winners go home with cash scholarships in total of $30,000 to further their academics. We have also donated hundreds of chess boards to individuals and groups, and have distributed hundreds of Chess Club t-shirts to Newark youth. The t-shirts read “Think Before You Move”. We are constantly welcoming mentors into our program. The commitment is small but the impact is great. We ask mentors to play chess with a child at any one of our locations for one hour per week. This means you! You are welcome to join us! There are no hoops to jump through or forms to fill out. Just show up, play chess, and talk to a child about life. That’s it!
