Heart of Vailsburg Block Club Coalition The online community for Heart of Vailsburg residents and their supporters, faciliated by Unified Vailsburg Services Organization (UVSO).

The HOV Block Club Coalition is an organizing project of the Unified Vailsburg Services Organization (UVSO) Department of Community Outreach & Planning. The coalition holds a general assembly each month to establish neighborhood priorities and action steps to improve the quality of life in the Vailsburg neighborhood. The HOV Steering, Resident Services, and Garden sub-committees engage residents i

n various revitalization projects and other calls-to-action that catalyze community stewardship empowering neighbors to actively create a stable and compassionate community. Plot It Fresh Applications are extended till Sunday March 15th, 11:59pm.

This is a really great opportunity to engage in community gardening here in the Newark Growing Space and to take part in food justice by growing food for yourselves and your community.

We have transitioned from one major farm at Hawthorne Ave that closed in 2024 to 7 smaller community garden sites that have absorbed the gardeners that wished to continue growing after the larger farm closed.

These new sites are located in the East, West & North Wards.

While we are prioritizing Returning garden members and Newark Residents, we are open to applications from residents from Newark surrounding areas.

Neighbors gathered to get their hands in the soil, learn how to prepare seedlings, share a meal, and kick off the growing season together. Moments like this are how our community gardens stay alive year after year — knowledge shared, seeds planted, and new growers stepping in.

The Heart of Vailsburg Garden Committee is kicking off another year at the HOV Healthy Havens, our neighborhood gardens that have been grown and cared for by community volunteers for over a decade.

🌿 Norwood Haven enters its 11th growing season
🌿 Eighteenth Haven celebrates its 10th

Before the soil warms and the beds fill, we start with seeds and neighbors.

Join us for our annual Seedling Party where we plan the season, start plants, and teach the basics of our favorite motto:

🌱Grow what you eat❗️
📅 Saturday, March 14, 2026
⏰ 1 PM – 4 PM
📍 1033 South Orange Ave, Newark

We’ll cover:
👉🏿Which plants to start indoors
👉🏿What vegetables our gardens will grow this season
👉🏿Timing, lighting, watering, and fertilizing for success

Whether you’re brand new to gardening or already have a green thumb, this is the perfect way to plug into the season and meet your neighbors.

We’re also looking for the next generation of urban growers to help steward these gardens for years to come.

Refreshments will be served and families are welcome.
