Franciscan Charities, Inc. We're so much more than a soup kitchen! Since 2004 we've fed, clothed and lifted up thousands. Ann’s, a nearly-abandoned church in the Central Ward.

Franciscan Charities got its start in 2004 as a response to a call for help. A handful of Newark’s most needy had gathered in the basement of St. They were poor and hungry. led around the entrance. The police told the volunteers to go home, but under the guidance of Brother Paul Miller they kept returning. Soon 12 became 20 and then 200. In time, volunteers rebuilt the kitchen, the church reopened, gangs moved on and Franciscan Charities reclaimed a small piece of community. Since then Franciscan Charities has worked with more than a thousand volunteers to help our neighbors in Newark -- serving over a million meals, distributing more than 20 thousand coats, hats, gloves, scarves hats, and toys, supplying school supplies and backpacks to more than a thousand Newark students, providing countless packs of personal hygiene products and diapers, and resolving thousands of social service and welfare issues.

Franciscan Charities got its start in 2004 as a response to a call for help.  A handful of Newark’s most needy had gathered in the basement of St. Ann’s, a nearly-abandoned church in the Central Ward.  They were poor and hungry.

A few volunteers showed up with hot soup and sincere intentions that first day and served 12 people.  They had little access to running water, no kitchen to speak of, frequent power outages and plenty of doubts.  Gang members milled around the entrance.

Since then we’ve worked with more than a thousand volunteers to help our neighbors in Newark — serving over a million meals, distributing more than 20 thousand coats, hats, gloves, scarves hats, and toys, supplying school supplies and backpacks to more than a thousand Newark students, providing countless packs of personal hygiene products and diapers, and resolving thousands of social service and welfare issues.

We do all that with a skeleton crew of staff and plenty of volunteers and through the generosity of donors like you, and have been recognized by Charity Navigator as a high impact organization. We get results.

On this Giving Tuesday, and throughout this giving season, we ask that you visit our website and click on Donate and help sustain our mission.

We can’t do it without you.

Last Christmas Eve, we had a knock on our back door. A young pregnant woman with her worried husband were looking for help. New to the city, new to the country, far from family. They wore nothing but the light clothing they arrived in.

We quickly found them warm coats and blankets, a bassinet, stroller and diapers, a warm cup of cocoa and a hot meal. We assured them that they had found a place to belong, feel loved and have their needs met.

Before long a baby was born and these two young parents had all they needed to start a new life for their family of three: a ride home from the hospital, diapers, clothing, food to eat and plenty of love and support.

We hear these stories over and over again at Franciscan Charities: someone arrives on our doorstep, in need of essentials just to get by. And time and again we meet that need. We’re a four star Charity Navigator-rated high impact organization because we get things done.

We’re able to do that because of our generous donors and devoted volunteers and staff.

Join us on this GivingTuesday to help make a difference in the lives of the neediest among us! Visit our website, www.franciscancharitiesinc.org and click on the Donate button. Be the reason a neighbor does not go cold and hungry tonight.

Over the years Franciscan Charities has kept thousands of our neighbors warm with hot meals and winter clothing.

And once again this year, on November 16, we delivered the gift of warmth to our neighbors - distributing more than 750 coats, hats, gloves, socks, and more at our annual coat drive.

Many thanks to our generous donors and tireless volunteers and staff who once again helped us equip those in need here in Newark for the long Jersey winter ahead. We couldn’t do it without you!

Give the gift of warmth! As the cold weather approaches, we’re gearing up for our annual winter coat drive - this year on November 16 from 12 to 3pm.

Over the years Franciscan Charities has helped keep thousands in our Newark community warm with coats, hats, scarves, gloves and socks! We couldn’t do that without the generosity of our donors and the tireless work of our volunteers.

Can you help us out this year? Head to our website (link in bio), click on the Donate button and specify “For Coat Drive” in the comments section.
