Fisheries management helps prevent overfishing and protects marine life, ensuring healthy ecosystems and a sustainable seafood supply. According to the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council, the Mid-Atlantic fishing industry generated over $5.5 billion in sales and supports over 58,000 jobs. By regulating fishing practices and adapting to changing ocean conditions, fisheries management protects species and habitats. MARACOOS OceansMap allows the public and decision-makers to monitor real-time changes in temperature, waves, and more, supporting effective fisheries management for a sustainable Mid-Atlantic Ocean.

High Frequency (HF) Radar is one of the most important tools for observing surface ocean currents in real time providing critical data that the U.S. Coast Guard and NOAA use to narrow search areas during rescues, track hazardous spills, and support life-saving forecasts.

Earlier this month, members of MARACOOS HF Radar team presented at the Radiowave Operators Working Group Workshop hosted by Oregon State University and NANOOS. These workshops are important for continued collaboration and strengthening the IOOS Association HF Radar Network- the only one of itโ€™s kind in the nation- ensuring the data it produces remains reliable, consistent, and ready when it's needed the most.

Bycatch affects biodiversity and food web dynamics as populations of key species diminish. Reducing bycatch is essential for protecting vulnerable species and maintaining balanced ecosystems. MARACOOS OceansMap provides real-time ocean data, including temperature and currents, empowering fisheries to make informed fishing decisions that can promote sustainable fishing practices across the Mid-Atlantic.
