The MERHAB project is led by Dr. Margaret Mulholland, Old Dominion University. Co-investigators are: Dr. Sophie Clayton and Dr. Eileen Hofmann, Old Dominion University; Dr. Pierre St-Laurent, Dr. Marjy Friedrichs, Dr. Kimberly Reece, Dr. William Reay and Dr. Susanna Musick, Virginia Institute of Marine Science; Mary Ford, Mid-Atlantic Regional Association Coastal Ocean Observing System, and Michelle Tomlinson and Jennifer Maucher Fuquay, NOAA NCCOS.

Partners that will continue to aid in transitioning project results to management entities include the Virginia Departments of Health and Environmental Quality, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Chesapeake Bay Monitoring Program, NOAA NCCOS, MARACOOS, and Hampton Roads Sanitation District.

Scientists are monitoring an active bloom, margalefidinium polykrikoides, also referred to as Marg, on the Lower Chesapeake Bay.

MARACOOS collaborates with researchers and state and federal agencies to help the Mid-Atlantic region improve its ability to monitor, predict, and respond to HAB events. Among our projects are the National Harmful Algal Bloom Observing Network (NHABON), Modeling and Forecasting with VIMS via the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Forecast System, and the HAB Monitoring and Forecast System for Margalefidinium and Alexandrium Blooms in cooperation with the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science. The University of Maryland Hydronet's new water-level sensor at Breezy Point Beach and Campground in Calvert County, MD is a great example of what regional partnerships can accomplish. Through the collaboration of MARACOOS, our partners at University of Maryland, and Calvert County Government Division of Emergency Management, this station brings real-time water-level data to a community that has faced flood risk without nearby monitoring.

Excerpt from the story:

Looking beyond emergency response, Tim Canty said maintaining the network over many years will allow researchers and communities to better understand long-term trends in sea level rise, land subsidence and changing flood patterns. He said that the project’s primary mission is helping communities make informed decisions.

“The data doesn’t mean a thing if it’s just sitting on someone’s computer somewhere. What’s important is making sure anyone who needs this data can access it quickly and reliably, but it’s also in a form that communities can use, such that you don’t need a PhD to see what’s going on,” Canty said. “We’re doing this because we want it to matter to people.”
