Our Leadership Newark Class of 2028 came together for an incredible two-day retreat filled with teamwork, meaningful conversations, laughter, and personal growth.

Throughout these two days, our Fellows were reminded that leadership isn’t just about the individual, it’s about the strength of the team, the willingness to listen, and the ability to appreciate perspectives different from our own.

What began as a gathering of individuals from different backgrounds, professions, and experiences quickly became something much more: a community built on trust, collaboration, and a shared commitment to making a difference.

We all walked away with fresh perspectives, stronger connections, and a deeper appreciation for one another!

Congratulations to Leadership Newark Class of 2005 alumnus Captain George Lawton on his promotion from Commander to Captain during a ceremony held this past Friday at the Washington Navy Yard in Washington, D.C.

It was great to see so many alumni and fellows reconnecting, catching up, and enjoying each other’s company while welcoming prospective members of the Class of 2028.

There was something special about seeing old friends say “hey” after months, or even years apart, while extending the same warmth and encouragement to new faces considering the Leadership Newark journey. The energy, conversations, and sense of community reminded us that Leadership Newark is more than a program, it’s a lifelong network.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the evening such a memorable one.

Over two years, Fellows engage in immersive public policy sessions, site visits, collaborative learning, and a Community Leadership Initiative (CLI) project designed to create meaningful impact throughout Newark.

Last week, Leadership Newark proudly concluded our two-part Non-Profit Board Service Training with our Board Match & Connect Dinner at Fernandes Steakhouse II.
Following an engaging day of board governance training on May 30, participants had the opportunity to network with local nonprofit leaders, explore board service opportunities, and build meaningful community connections. The evening fostered thoughtful conversations, new relationships, and a shared commitment to strengthening nonprofit leadership throughout Greater Newark.
We are grateful to everyone who participated and to our nonprofit partners for helping make this experience a success. We look forward to seeing many of these new connections grow into impactful board service opportunities that benefit our community for years to come.

What a tremendous day this past Saturday, May 30, at Leadership Newark’s Non-Profit Board Service Training Workshop!

We were thrilled to host a packed house of engaged participants committed to strengthening their leadership and service throughout our community. While it was certainly a long day, the energy, interaction, and positive feedback made it all worthwhile.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, participated, asked thoughtful questions, and helped make the workshop both impactful and fun. We look forward to announcing our next Board Service Training soon!
