In 2010, 6th Street & Growing Community Gardens was incorporated as a 501(c)3 organization to sustain and expand urban gardening in inner-city Newark. Our first project was the expansion of the Garden of Hope on South 6th Street from a Denison University project to grow fresh produce for food pantries to a neighborhood community garden. We expanded the garden from three to 48 community grown plots, added a deer fence, picnic tables and a shed. As local gardeners from the neighborhood joined in, a new community garden was born. In the summers of 2011 and 2012 more than 100 people gardened in the 48 plots at 6th Street. Our second project was to create a new community garden on Western Avenue. In 2012, we obtained a lease for the lot, installed a hydrant, erected a fence, and built raised beds. In Spring 2012, the garden opened for planting. In the Fall of 2012, we received a grant to build 10 new handicap accessible tall raised beds and with the help of volunteers, constructed the beds.
On January 1, 2018, we merged with Together We Grow, Inc., which began as a nonprofit in 2014. Once we joined Together We Grow, the combined non profit has a total of five community gardens and and five school gardens. We are very excited to see what the future brings!
