Honoring Our Founder 💐

This week, our incredible founder, Vu-An Foster, officially stepped down from her role as a founding member and Vice Chairperson of the New Jersey Maternal Care Quality Collaborative (NJMCQC).

Vu-An has dedicated the last 4+ years to advancing maternal health equity across the state—bringing the voices of families and advocates to the table. Her leadership, vision, and lived experience as the founder of Life After 2 Losses have been a powerful force for change.

We are especially proud to share a heartfelt letter she received from First Lady Tammy Murphy, thanking her for her years of service and recognizing the impact she’s made.

Though she may be stepping down, Vu-An is not stepping away. Her commitment to uplifting families and ending disparities in maternal health continues stronger than ever.

We see you. We celebrate you. And we’re so proud. 💛

Today, our founder was honored to be invited on behalf of Mikie Sherrill’s gubernatorial campaign to participate in a Maternal Health Listening Session alongside Assemblywoman Shanique Speight in Bloomfield.

This session provided a powerful platform for community voices to share real experiences, name urgent priorities, and offer solutions in the fight for maternal health equity.

Our founder shared her deeply personal story as someone who has endured the devastating consequences of systemic racism and bias in both the U.S. and New Jersey healthcare systems:

When her water broke early, she was sent home without the care that could have saved her pregnancy. The situation turned septic, endangering her life. A biased doctor delayed emergency care, insisting on an HIV test based solely on racial profiling. He attempted to draw blood over 20 times while her body was in full-blown sepsis. She was later transferred to a ward unequipped to care for her or her baby—who she was told would not survive.
In a subsequent pregnancy, early signs of rupture were ignored. Her water broke in the hospital parking lot, and she had to fight to be admitted. Some nurses still hesitated to offer care. Her baby passed in her arms after being induced just one day before the NICU cut-off. Even after delivering a healthy son, she was repeatedly dismissed while experiencing life-threatening symptoms. It was only her health literacy and insistence on being heard that led to a diagnosis of severe postpartum preeclampsia—something that could have taken her life.
These are not isolated incidents—they reflect the broader crisis of inequity and neglect in maternal healthcare.

It was incredibly meaningful to share space with dedicated advocates including Damali Campbell Oparaji, Atiya Weiss, Juwana Montgomery, Jill Wodnick, Nabila Baptiste, and others.

We are deeply grateful to the Campaign team for centering lived experience, listening with care, and valuing our expertise in shaping policies that protect maternal and child health and support New Jersey families.

Through Life After 2 Losses, we will continue to honor our babies and fight for systemic change. This work is not only personal—it is essential.

I had the privilege of being invited to speak at Princeton University for a powerful and timely event focused on Black reproductive and sexual health, in collaboration with Princeton's Students for Reproductive Justice (PSRJ).

The evening opened with an insightful lecture by Professor Kelsey Henry, who traced the history of Black reproductive and sexual health in the U.S. Her depth of knowledge set the stage for meaningful dialogue and reflection.

I was honored to share the mission and work of Life After 2 Losses, and how we advocate for Black maternal health by centering the voices and lived experiences of those most impacted. These conversations are essential—not just in academic spaces, but in our communities, policies, healthcare systems, and beyond.

At the conclusion of the event, Madeleine Morales, a UPenn Law student, shared her perspective on Black reproductive justice from a legal lens—highlighting the critical intersection between healthcare, law, and systemic equity. Her reflections underscored how policy and legal advocacy are essential tools in dismantling barriers and advancing reproductive justice for Black communities.

I'm grateful to PSRJ for the invitation and to all the students and faculty who showed up with curiosity, care, and a commitment to justice. I truly believe our members—and all of us—benefit deeply from this kind of knowledge-sharing and community building. 💜

A huge thanks to my program officer Sona Smith and Ms. Foundation for Women for the opportunity to attend the annual Ms Foundation Women of Vision awards, honoring women, girls, and Gender-expansion people who galvanize communities and drive change. This year’s theme, “Seeding Solidarity & Sisterhood,” reflects the intentions of the Ms Foundations at a time of cultural division.
