Newark Pride Inc. This year marks 20 years of service and the dawn of a new way forward. As a result, in 2005, Newark Gay Pride held its inaugural week-long Pride celebration.

Newark’s Annual LGBTQ+ Pride Festival has become a regionally-anticipated event since 2005 drawing thousands of people to Downtown Newark in honor of Sakia Gunn. Newark Gay Pride is a regionally anticipated signature event with an itinerary of social, educational, political and cultural programs for youth, adults, families, and allies. Newark Pride Week was founded shortly after the horrific death

of Sakia Gunn, a teenager who was targeted and murdered because of her sexual orientation in the heart of downtown Newark. Through grassroots organizing, Newark’s LGBTQ community advocated for safe spaces and programming. Ten years later, Newark Pride has evolved with the city’s changing landscape and has grown into a regionally anticipated event, drawing thousands of people to Newark’s Downtown Business District. From thriving cultural institutions like the NJPAC, Prudential Arena and The Newark Museum to a variety of new restaurants, hotels and luxury apartments that are transforming the downtown area - Newark is on the rise.

COOKIEE KAWAII ANNOUNCED AS 2026 HEADLINER!!

Newark Pride is thrilled to announce viral music sensation Cookiee Kawaii as the official headliner for the 2026 Newark Pride Festival.

Known for her high-energy performances, Jersey Club anthems, and global hit “Vibe (If I Back It Up),” Cookiee Kawaii has become one of New Jersey’s most influential contemporary artists, bringing Newark and Jersey Club culture to audiences worldwide.

Festival organizers also hinted at a special tribute honoring the late DJ Melodious, whose impact on Black q***r nightlife, ballroom culture, and the regional club music scene remains deeply felt throughout New Jersey and beyond.

CELEBRITY HOSTS ANNOUNCED

The 2026 Newark Pride Festival will be hosted by acclaimed actor Rodney Chester, best known for his groundbreaking role as Alex Kirby on the iconic LGBTQ+ television series “Noah’s Arc,” alongside ballroom legend Tyra Old Navy, one of New Jersey’s most celebrated and influential figures in ballroom culture.

Together, the hosts represent the intersection of legacy, visibility, artistry, and Black q***r excellence that continues to define Newark Pride.

As Newark Pride enters its 21st year, the organization remains committed to uplifting LGBTQ+ communities through advocacy, cultural celebration, education, wellness initiatives, and year-round community engagement.

“Our Bodies. Our Stories. Our Power!” is more than a theme—it is a movement rooted in truth, resilience, remembrance, and joy.

The LGBTQ+ community is part of the World Cup because we are part of every country, every culture, and every community represented across this world. As a community, our heart breaks to hear of the passing of Pamela Palmer, also known as “DJ Melodious”— a beloved New Jersey DJ whose life moved in rhythm and whose spirit lived through sound.

A devoted mother, cultural tastemaker, and creative force, she helped shape the musical heartbeat of her community through her passion for DJ culture, house, and club music.

As the mother of Jersey Club artist Cookiee Kawaii, Melodious’ influence reached far beyond the turntables. Music filled their home, becoming both inheritance and language. Her love for sound, movement, and self-expression planted the seeds for a new generation of artistry that would go on to inspire audiences around the world.

Those who knew her remember her as vibrant, nurturing, and deeply connected to the power of music to bring people together. Though she may no longer be physically present, her legacy lives on in every beat, every dance floor, and every moment her daughter and community continue to move in joy and remembrance.

Our prayers and sincerest codolences are with her family, friends, and loved ones. May she rest in power and her melody remain eternal. 🎶🕊️
