Remember when Newark's first Riverfront Parks were built in 2012-13, including the orange boardwalk and new sports fields?

These community spaces were created by the Newark and Essex County governments thanks to 30 years of organizing, advocacy, and struggle by residents, ICC and allies. Residents demanded to be included in the details of design to make sure it met our needs.

In 2017, the City of Newark hired a different design team to prepare plans for the final segment of Ironbound riverfront park. This proposal includes things that are difficult to maintain, like sand beach and volleyball courts, does not have a straight easy path for biking, and in general fails to reflect inclusive community visions that Newarkers have created for their only riverfront.

Since then, Friends of Riverfront Park, a volunteer resident group that helps program and maintain the park, has been working to change the proposed design to make it more maintainable and reflective of what Newarkers want.

Next Tuesday, March 28, at 6:30 pm, join us at St Stephen's Church (8 Wilson Ave at Ferry St) to discuss the proposed design and how we can make it better.
