Maroon Theatre Project is excited to announce the launch of the Lorraine Hansberry Youth Playwriting Fellowship, a groundbreaking initiative created specifically for Newark's youth. This unique program is designed to empower high school students, providing them with a platform to explore sociopolitical issues, collaborate with their peers, and write original plays that delve into topics they are most passionate about. Through the art of theatre, this fellowship aims to equip youth with the tools and skills necessary to address social justice issues, fostering leadership, problem-solving abilities, and an environment that values creativity, self-expression, and artistic development.

Fellows Will:
-Receive a $750 stipend disbursed throughout the fellowship.
-Gain a deep understanding of social justice issues and the power of theatre in addressing them.
-Develop artistic and creative writing skills.
-Foster collaboration, teamwork and build community with their peers.
-Receive mentorship and guidance from experienced theatre professionals.
-Showcase original play in a special staged reading series in Spring 2024.

We are looking for Newark high schoolers ages 14-18 for this program which will run from mid-November to May 2024. This is a hybrid opportunity with a mix of in-person and virtual meetings on Wednesdays 4:00pm-6:30pm and one Saturday a month 11am-3pm.

We are thrilled to announce that Maroon Theatre Project was selected to receive $20K from by way of the Victoria Foundation as part of a new innovative and youth-centered initiative, NextGen Grantmakers. The NextGen Grantmaking Fund is led and designed by cohort of 9 Newark high school students. Together they developed the vision and mission for the grantmaking resources and designed the criteria, application and selection process. This cohort of young people chose 3 three Newark-based nonprofits focusing on youth self-determination.

These funds will be used to launch MTP’s very first offering for high school aged youth, the Lorraine Hansberry Youth Playwriting Fellowship. Through this program, young people will have the opportunity to engage with socio-political issues, collaborate with peers to write original plays that explore social justice topics of their choosing, and express themselves through the arts.

We are truly honored to be part of the inaugural grant-making cycle and look forward to our work together! Huge thank you to and the Victoria Foundation for creating this pathway and congratulations to the recipients doing great work with Newark youth!
