Brothers Building A Better Nation (BBABN) is a Newark, New Jersey based organization aimed at educating, mentoring and inspiring young Black and Latino males to build resilience and improve overall opportunity and well-being.

People do not heal in isolation.

That belief now has a symbol.

Today, we are introducing the new BBABN logo—but its story did not begin in a design studio.

It began with an image of brothers holding hands in a circle, shared by our founder, Quadeer Porter. Mike Pierre transformed that image into the original logo concept.

As BBABN’s identity evolved, Darryl Jennings shaped its second vision: brothers not simply standing beside one another, but lifting one another up.

Look closely, and you will see our story:

▪ The three brothers represent relationships, responsibility, and mutual support.

▪ The figures form a house—an environment of safety, stability, resources, community, and belonging.

▪ At the center is a person formed from bricks. The bricks do not represent someone who is broken. They represent resilience and everything that can be built from a person’s experiences.

▪ The larger shape resembles a lotus, representing healing, growth, purpose, and opportunity.

▪ The connected figures remind us that brotherhood is more than standing together. It is belonging, accountability, shared responsibility, and collective strength.

Every part of this symbol brings us back to one promise:

No brother should have to navigate healing alone.

A new logo does not create a new organization. It makes visible what has always been at the heart of BBABN.

This marks the beginning of a new chapter—one in which we will share more of our history, our people, our programs, and what brotherhood-centered care looks like in action.

Too many Black and Brown men are carrying heavy things quietly. We have a responsibility to make sure they do not have to carry them alone.

I’m grateful to the Honorable Councilwoman Amina Bey and the Central Ward team for taking the time to sit down with us for a meaningful conversation about the challenges facing men and boys of color in Newark.

Joining me from Brothers Building A Better Nation were Dr. Mervin Griffin, our Medical Director, and Jeremiah Hagan Robinson, BBABN Mentor.

We were joined by Councilwoman Amina Bey, Tammy Mack, and Dr. Tolu.

What I appreciated most about the conversation was the willingness to listen.

We talked about mental health, behavioral health, mentorship, access to care, and the importance of making sure our brothers are connected to people who understand them and are prepared to support them.

At BBABN, we believe every brother deserves to have someone he can talk to.

Someone who sees him.

Someone who listens without judgment.

And when he needs professional support, someone who can provide care that is culturally responsive, clinically sound, and grounded in an understanding of his lived experience.

That kind of support does not come from one organization working alone.

It takes physicians, behavioral health professionals, mentors, families, schools, community organizations, and elected leaders working together around the same goal.

That is why this meeting mattered.

We are building relationships that can lead to stronger systems of care for the men, boys, and families we serve.

I left this conversation encouraged, but also motivated.

There is still a great deal of work to do.

And we intend to do it.

Brothers Building A Better Nation and the Central Ward team are continuing to explore how we can work together to make sure more brothers in Newark are seen, heard, supported, and connected to the care they deserve.

Sometimes “thank you” simply isn’t enough.

BBABN is deeply grateful to the City of Newark Office of Violence Prevention and Trauma Recovery (OVPTR) for investing in our 2026 Healing Centered Mentorship Program.

Their support means Newark’s young people have access to mentors who show up, listen, challenge them, expose them to new possibilities, and remind them that their future is worth investing in.

That is violence prevention.
That is healing.
That is community.

And this work deserves our support.

It’s funny how God works.

Today, I finally had the opportunity to meet Mr. Douglas Freeman of the Weequahic Park Sports Authority in person while picking up a youth we both support. After years of talking over the phone, it was a blessing to finally shake hands, fellowship, and talk about the work we’re both passionate about.

One thing was clear from our conversation, we share the same goal: creating more opportunities for the youth and families of Newark.

I’m looking forward to partnering with Mr. Freeman and the entire Weequahic Park Sports Authority team. When organizations come together instead of working in silos, our young people win, our families are stronger, and our city is better for it.

Thank you for the warm welcome today, Brother Freeman. Here’s to building something meaningful together for Newark.

Brotherhood. Scholarship. Legacy.

This moment is bigger than graduation. Standing alongside brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc. represents the power of Black and Brown unity, cultural pride, leadership, and collective advancement.

Founded in 1906 at Cornell University, Alpha Phi Alpha became the first intercollegiate Black Greek-letter fraternity in history. Built during an era of racial exclusion in higher education, the fraternity created a pathway for Black men to lead through scholarship, advocacy, and service. Alpha men helped shape the Civil Rights Movement, with members including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall, and W.E.B. Du Bois.

Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc. — La Unidad Latina — was founded in 1982, also at Cornell University, to empower Latino students through academic excellence, cultural consciousness, and community leadership. The organization became the first Latino-based fraternity incorporated in New York State and continues building leaders nationwide.

Together, these organizations symbolize the symbiotic brotherhood that BBABN believes in:
different histories, shared purpose.

When Black and Brown communities unite through education, service, healing, and advocacy, we create stronger futures for the next generation. This partnership is not performative — it is legacy work.

Brothers Building A Better Nation is proud to announce the donation of 6 Apple computers that will directly support digital access, workforce readiness, education, and community empowerment efforts within the neighborhoods we serve.

Technology access is no longer optional — it is essential. These devices will help individuals and families gain access to:
• Online learning opportunities
• Workforce development resources
• Resume and job application support
• Telehealth and behavioral health services
• Digital literacy training
• Community programming and youth engagement

We believe closing the digital divide is part of building stronger communities. Every computer donated represents opportunity, connection, and progress.
