We gave The Endo Room a few updates and it's ready for our next guests arriving on Thursday evening.
Most of the art work has been created and given to us by the families we've had the privilege of hosting. We absolutely love the positive and sometimes funny messages they display and it's a great way to inspire hope for our future guests.
No one should battle endometriosis alone. πŸ’›

We're very excited to debut our very own endometriosis brochure! This is another big milestone for us and has been a top priority after seeing the need in the endometriosis community. Our brochure gives a high level overview of the disease, diagnosis and treatment but focuses more on symptoms, early detection and SUPPORT!
The next goal is to get these into schools, hospitals/ERs and doctor's offices. If you know any
offices interested, have them contact us at [email protected]. Thank you to the doctors who reviewed and provided feedback. πŸ’›πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ

Wow! I never imagined The Endo Room would touch so many or that my post would go viral. It has been shared so many times that I'm doing my best to keep up with all the private messages. I am going to try to answer as many questions in this post as possible.

My name is Tara Hilton and I am a long time endo warrior battling stage 4 endometriosis. I know all too well the financial burden this disease has on families. In addition to starting The Endo Room, I also started a 501c3 non-profit called The Yellow Cape - Delaware's Endo Community. Our mission is to change in the way endometriosis affects our communities by providing education, support, and resources, with a primary focus on early detection.

I opened The Endo Room on Nov 1, 2017 and hosted our first guest on Nov 22, 2017. When I first opened the room, I only had a luxury air mattress to offer in the open space of my office. My friend Didi donated decor and several endo sisters made paintings and other decor to make it feel warm and inviting. I eventually saved enough money to upgrade to a queen size bedroom set and Bob's Discount Furniture donated a very nice mattress so that women had comfort and quality to recover on.

After my youngest daughter moved out on her own, I moved The Endo Room to a bigger space with fresh paint, a nice tv, cozy reading chair and lots of milestones memorabilia to look at. The soft colors were chosen on purpose to make it feel calm and relaxing.

My home is a smoke free, clean home that comes with laughter, tissues for tears, lots of support and a family atmosphere. (Smokers are welcomed and allowed to smoke outdoors)

We do have a dog, Ruckus that has also been nicknamed The Endo Dog. He's been around endo enough to sense when someone is having a flare-up and is so careful and loving.

The Endo Specialist in the area is Dr. Barbara McGuirk at Endometriosis & Pelvic Pain Center. She's amazing! If you schedule an appt, tell them I told you about the SEEDS/Second opinion program. The first consultation visit will be free. πŸ’›

Several people asked me to go live from The Endo Room and I will do that this weekend!

Thanks,
Tara

For all of the new members, The Endo Room is a Guest Room in my home dedicated for the past 2 years, to those traveling to Delaware for Endometriosis Excision Surgery.
With advance arrangements, guests are welcomed to stay free of charge. Included with each stay is a full, private bathroom, toiletries and continental breakfast. It's my pleasure to help eliminate the burden of hotel costs in addition to everything else these families are going through. πŸ’›πŸ›

Today is the beginning of Endometriosis Awareness Month. This disease affects 1 in 10 women and of those, 75% experience debilitating symptoms. The worst part of this disease is it takes an average of 8 to 10 years to be properly diagnosed. This is due to a lack of proper awareness, even within the medical community.

Many think the "only" side affect is infertility and say, "Ok, so what... you can't have kids". πŸ˜” As heartbreaking as infertility is, that's only ONE affect this disease has. Other affects include: chronic pain, excessive bleeding, painful bladder syndrome or always feeling like you have a UTI, chronic bowel issues, lower back and hip pain, fatigue and more.

Many of those battling endometriosis cannot afford proper care or excision surgery so they suffer in silence. They withdrawal from family and friends because others don't understand or think they're faking. Many think there's "always something wrong". Please understand: This is a chronic disease and there's no cure. But it doesn't have to be a silent life sentence.

Here at The Yellow Cape, we believe no one should have to fight alone. We're here for you.

To all the Veterans out there, we salute you. Happy Veterans Day! πŸ’›
