We envision a neighborhood where you always have choices for dinner.

In a cohousing community, everyone keeps their own private home and fully equipped kitchen for the nights they want to cook a quiet meal at home. But we also look forward to having regular opportunities to join in on casual shared meals with neighbors when you don’t feel like making dinner from scratch.

It’s a simple way to take a night off from cooking and catch up with friends close to home.

“Who wants to come over for pizza on Friday?” 🍕

Sometimes, that’s all it takes to start a neighborhood tradition. A few people bring toppings. Someone asks if you’re doing it again next week. Before long, you’ve got a regular pizza night.

At Newark Area Cohousing, we look forward to creating those traditions together. Maybe you’d organize Sunday coffee walks, host a fall potluck, or get a friendly chili cook-off going.

Shared decision-making does not have to mean endless meetings or unanimous enthusiasm for every proposal.

In sociocracy, decisions are made by consent. The question is not whether a proposal is everyone's favorite, but whether there is a reasoned objection showing that it would interfere with the group's shared purpose.

The nonprofit organization Sociocracy for All published this article describing consent decision-making in simple terms.

It is one way Newark Area Cohousing balances participation, listening, and the ability to keep moving forward together.

Most of us have things we use once in a while but store all year. A ladder, a power drill, or that folding table that only comes out for holiday dinners. 🪜

When you know your neighbors, it’s easier to ask, “Could I borrow yours?” One ladder can serve several households, giving everyone a little less to buy and squeeze into the garage. And picking it up might turn into a chance to catch up, too.

At Newark Area Cohousing, we love the idea of making everyday life a little easier by sharing what we have.

This year’s DesignPhiladelphia Next Now Design Symposium includes a panel dedicated to cohousing, bringing together voices to explore this growing approach to housing and community.

The symposium is a half-day event featuring conversations about the ideas shaping the future of design and the built environment — and registration is just $30, or $15 for students.

We’re excited to see cohousing included in a major Philadelphia design event and to see more people across the region exploring new ways of thinking about home, neighborhood, and community.

Some neighbors become friends you can talk to about anything. Others are your morning walking buddies, the people you swap recipes with, or someone you always enjoy chatting with at the mailbox. 😊

Each friendship brings something different to everyday life. They all help a neighborhood feel like home.

At Newark Area Cohousing, that’s the kind of community we envision. A place where people can get to know each other at their own pace and friendships can grow from even one shared interest.

A place that works beautifully for a six-year-old won't automatically feel right at sixteen.

Older kids may want somewhere to spend time with friends, a way to contribute to an issue they care about, or simply fewer adults asking them questions every time they walk past.

Multigenerational cohousing needs to make room for that growing independence.

One useful planning habit is to ask teens specific questions and let them answer in a way that suits them. A short conversation about a shared room may tell you more than inviting them to sit through a long adult meeting.

Parents still set family expectations, and any arrangements need community discussion.

For Newark's multigenerational vision, remembering the years between childhood and adulthood is part of thinking ahead.

If you love the idea of a food co-op, cohousing may feel surprisingly familiar.

At a cooperative like Weavers Way, members aren't simply customers. They help support an organization built around shared ownership, participation, local relationships, and values that extend beyond maximizing profit.

Cohousing applies some of that same cooperative spirit to neighborhood life. Residents have private homes, but they also participate in decisions, care for shared spaces, pool certain resources, and help shape the culture of the community.

You don't have to agree about everything. The point is that the people affected by the community have a meaningful role in creating it.
