The benefits of a multigenerational community are not limited to families with very young children.

This article from Cohousing ABQ considers what pre-teens and teenagers can gain from knowing trusted adults outside their immediate families, mentoring younger children, helping neighbors, participating in community decisions, and having friends and activities close to home.

Newark Area Cohousing is forming a multigenerational community because people at every stage of life have something valuable to contribute, and something valuable to receive.

Many parents with young children are attracted to cohousing. They want an environment where their children have friends a few steps from their front door. They want safe places for them to play and explore. They want other adults around to share parenting experiences and be extended family to their....

One thing we appreciate about Newark is how many places invite you to slow down. A walk through White Clay Creek, a stop for coffee, or simply taking the longer route home can completely change your day.

We love the idea of building a community that makes those little moments easier to enjoy.

Does cohousing mean giving up your privacy?

We’re sharing this thoughtful piece from Gratitude Village Colorado because it addresses one of the first questions many people ask about cohousing.

Cohousing is not about spending every moment together. It combines fully private homes with shared spaces that make connection easier when you want it.

As Newark Area Cohousing shapes our own community, we are thinking carefully about how both the physical design and community culture can support belonging, independence, and time alone.

When we talk about the future, it's rarely about big moments. It's usually the everyday things like knowing your neighbors, taking an evening walk, or deciding at the last minute to meet up for dinner.

Those little moments are what make a place feel like home.

In cohousing, food can be much more than a meal.

This story from Cohousing ABQ shows how cooking, gardening, and eating together can become expressions of mutual care, whether neighbors are sharing family recipes, growing food, gathering for a potluck, or helping someone through an illness or difficult week.

Every cohousing community develops its own traditions, but shared meals often provide one of the simplest ways for neighbors of different ages and backgrounds to become a real community.

What food traditions would you enjoy sharing with future neighbors?

Food culture often reflects our values. For Cohousing ABQ, values like mutual care and a small environmental footprint come high on the list. That’s reflected in members’ shared food culture. One of our favorite late summer stops is the University of Delaware Fresh to You Farm Stand. Picking up local produce reminds us that simple routines like walking, shopping locally, and cooking with friends can be some of the most meaningful.

We love the idea of a neighborhood where community gardens, shared meals, and spending more time outdoors feel completely natural.

Choosing a cohousing community involves more than liking the homes or shared spaces.

This article from Sunnyside Village Cohousing suggests asking what ordinary daily life feels like, how decisions are made, what participation is expected, how shared expenses work, and whether the community supports different stages of life.

We’re sharing it because Newark Area Cohousing wants prospective neighbors to ask thoughtful questions, not only about the physical project, but also about the people and the kind of community life we are creating together.

Our introductory sessions offer a low-pressure place to learn, listen, and ask your own questions.

Joining an intentional community is one of the biggest lifestyle decisions you can make, and knowing the right questions to ask before you commit can save you a lot of time, money, and heartache.
