A public hearing will take place on June 22 at 7:30pm on the NewPark Place Specific Plan. The hearing at the Newark Planning Commission will consider two projects at NewPark Mall by Brookfield Properties -- a 319-unit residential project, and a 161,000 square foot Costco retail warehouse. All the details for the hearing can be found by clicking the link below. For those who've been following our posts, you know this development could be a real economic boost for the region. But Brookfield still refuses to sign an agreement with community stakeholders. We hope through the approvals process for this project that local elected officials hear our concerns that Brookfield must build responsibly.

We are expecting a public hearing on the NewPark Mall project on June 22. However, nothing is official yet. The hearing would cover Phase A of the project -- located at the north end, near the former Sears -- a six-story apartment building with 319 units. If you haven't signed our petition yet to support the hiring of local construction workers, you still have time. Link to the petition is below. Thanks!!

According to preliminary data from the state, as of March 2021, the Tri-Cities area had nearly 10,000 unemployed workers. That's a lot of people out of work. Ensuring that local folks will be hired as part of NewPark Mall redevelopment is critical to strengthening the local economy. But without support from the Newark City Council, the developer behind this project may well bring in construction workers from outside the area. If you haven't yet, please sign our petition. We need elected officials to know there is a high level of concern that as it stands, this project won't benefit all area residents.

Last week, the developer behind the proposed NewPark Mall redevelopment announced financial results for Jan-March 2021. The company earned $731 million in profits. Not a bad three months -- about $56 million in profits per week over the quarter. And still, Brookfield Property Partners doesn't feel the need to engage with community stakeholders to make sure their new development is built by local construction workers being paid fair wages and benefits. This is shameful at a time in our region when working families continue to struggle as we emerge from the pandemic.

But we're still looking for more support on our petition. If you've already signed, please encourage family and friends in the area to sign as well. Thanks!

Just an FYI, so everyone is aware of what Brookfield is proposing for the residential portion of the NewPark Mall redevelopment. This was part of a presentation last night at the Planning Commission. The construction of more than 1,500 new homes could create a lot of good jobs and apprenticeship opportunities for area residents!

In the fourth quarter of 2020, the company looking to redevelop the NewPark Mall, posted $1.8 billion, yes, billion, not million, in net income (profits). That's almost $20 million in profits per day over the period! And yet, they still refuse to sign a community benefits agreement to make sure our region realizes the maximum value from this project. Shame on Brookfield. Please sign our petition to urge Brookfield to listen to the community and do the right thing.

The NewPark Mall redevelopment is critically important for Newark's future. That's why we are urging the developer, Brookfield Property Partners, to build a project that benefits the entire region. We are urging Brookfield to commit to hiring a local workforce, paying family-supporting wages and creating opportunities for young people to gain construction careers through apprenticeship training programs. Join our efforts to raise standards in the construction industry. Let's make sure Brookfield Property Partners is held accountable for their actions. It's time Brookfield listened to community stakeholders instead of ignoring them. Click below and sign our petition!

The company behind the redevelopment of the NewPark Mall, Brookfield Property, has told investors there's the potential for $285 million in profits for the project. Then why is it that Brookfield refuses to sign a Community Benefits Agreement to help guarantee that good jobs will be available for local construction workers? Something is not right here!
