"The work that we're doing, it's more than a job. It's a movement." -- KSE

As we close out the year and look at what we've built together, it's worth going back to this conversation. Our Executive Director Khaatim Sherrer-El joined the Boys & Girls Club of Newark on Episode 17 of The Great Futures Forge to talk about growing up in Newark, losing his father, and why he sees this city as a debt you spend your life repaying.

He also gets into how CHCA really started: residents on their porches asking who was going to keep the home fires burning. Khaatim calls himself a gardener, building on what's already rooted here. From turning renters into owners to giving young people a reason to stay, that's the work happening in our neighborhood every day.

🎷🤍 Jazz in the Street was never just about one night.

When our neighbors show up dressed in all white, decorate their own tables, and sit down to share a meal together on Clinton Avenue, we see the bigger picture: we're building the neighborhood we want to live in, and the memories we'll carry with us for years to come.

Hear from Margie Mia X Johnson, Director of Arts & Placemaking, on how we transformed the Clinton Avenue sound stage into an open-air dining hall and theater to celebrate our heritage, history, culture, and unity. 🎶

🏘️ WHO OWNS NEWARK, and who gets to stay in our neighborhoods?

Join us for a community conversation on Housing Affordability and Displacement in Newark with Professor David Dante Troutt, Distinguished Professor of Law and Derrick Bell Scholar at Rutgers Law School and Director of the Rutgers Center on Law, Inequality and Metropolitan Equity (CLiME).

A son of Harlem, Dr. Troutt has spent decades writing about the quest for justice. He's the author of Who Owns Newark? and Reckoning the Racial Reckoning: From Backlash to Accountability After George Floyd (Cambridge University Press), and he'll give us a preview of his new book. 📚

Last Thursday, Clinton Ave had its own soundtrack 🎷✨

Live jazz, a community dinner, and dancing under the stars with our neighbors. A huge thank you to the incredible Antoinette Montague for filling our street with her voice and reminding us why our neighborhood's music history runs so deep. 🎶

And to every volunteer who set tables, served dinner, and made the night happen: we couldn't do this without you.💛

🎷 Jazz in the Street 2026 was the MOMENT! 🎷

Last Thursday, we turned Clinton Ave's sound stage into our dream lawn. Live jazz, a community dinner, gorgeous tablescapes from our neighbors, and dancing under the stars. ✨🍽️💃🏾

Thank you to everyone who came out, decorated a table, brought a neighbor or a friend, and helped make sure the night was a success. And thank you to the local musicians who brought the sound. This is what it looks like when we celebrate our history together. 🖤
