AQV was proud to participate in the 2026 Storytellers Summit in Washington, DC, organized by Refugee Advocacy Lab and Refugees International.The summit opened with a live reading of “We're Still Here”, an original poem by AQV Executive Director Steven Muleme.

Storytelling is more than sharing experiences, it's a powerful tool for advocacy, healing, and social change. Through our stories, we challenge harmful narratives and amplify the voices of forcibly displaced LGBTQ+ people around the world.

This past week, AQV’s Executive Director joined survivors, organizers, and LGBTQI+ advocates in the Adirondack Mountains for a meaningful retreat centered on storytelling, healing, bodily autonomy, and collective care.

The experience reaffirmed the power of stories to challenge harmful narratives, build solidarity, and imagine freer futures for our communities.

AQV looks forward to continuing these conversations through art, theater, literature, and community engagement.

This timely discussion will center Black immigrants and asylum seekers, exploring how anti-Blackness shapes immigration systems, whose stories are erased, and what collective care and accountability truly require.

We’re live!

African Q***r Voices (AQV) is officially here.

AQV was born out of a simple but urgent truth: African LGBTIQ+ stories, creativity, and resistance deserve to be seen, heard, and protected, without borders.

We are a platform and a community committed to amplifying African q***r voices through storytelling, arts, culture, advocacy, and global solidarity. From writers and artists to activists and truth-tellers, AQV exists to create space, safety, and visibility where it has too often been denied.

We are proud to share that African Q***r Voices is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, strengthening our commitment to accountability, sustainability, and community impact.

This launch would not have been possible without the dedication, guidance, and belief of our Board, whose support has helped turn this vision into a living organization.
