Coming out of the Equimundo summit in Rio, one thing is clear: the future of digital spaces is not predetermined.
The conversations in Rio last week reinforced that this is about more than screen time or attention. It's about agency, belonging, and whether the digital world helps people build meaningful relationships and communities.
There was also a growing sense of possibility. Policymakers, parents, technologists, and young people themselves are increasingly asking what healthier digital spaces could look like. And when young men talk about their online lives, they often describe searching for connection, identity, and community, not simply a place where harm occurs.
The challenge now is to move beyond reacting to what's broken and start defining what better looks like.
What if online spaces were designed to support human thriving rather than maximise engagement? What if they gave people more agency, created opportunities for meaningful connection, and strengthened ties to life offline rather than replacing them?
Over the next year, we'll work with partners to develop and test a shared vision for what a caring online space looks like, grounded in lived experience and shaped by many voices.
By the time we gather again at the Changemakers Summit in Australia in 2027, our goal is to move beyond conversation and closer to action.
