Canada is opening the door to Chinese electric vehicles, among them EV giant BYD.
While these cars are sold as a climate solution, BYD’s supply chain tells a different story. These vehicles are powered by the mineral lithium, and BYD sources its lithium from Chinese-occupied Tibet.
Lithium extraction is notoriously destructive, depleting water systems, poisoning soil, and devastating ecosystems.
In an occupied country like Tibet, “informed consent” is a myth. When Tibetans peacefully resist Chinese mining operations and other mega-development projects like hydropower dams, they are imprisoned, and in some cases, killed.
There is no independent environmental monitoring, no community consent, and no transparency.
Canada’s decision to rubber-stamp BYD’s entry is an endorsement of a green future built on environmental destruction and colonial occupation.
