The County Tyrone Society of New York is deeply saddened by the loss of Frank McGuigan. Our deepest sympathies are with Frank’s wife Geraldine, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, wider family circle as well as cherished friends.

An iconic figure in Gaelic football, Frank was one of our distinguished honorees at the society’s 2025 dinner dance held at Leonard’s Palazzo on March 1st, 2025, and co-hosted by Tyrone GFC NY. We had a wonderful evening; Frank was in great form and played a blinder on the podium, delivering an honest, insightful and funny acceptance speech.

Rest easy dearest Frank – your legacy will live on. Thank you for your unwavering pride in County Tyrone and your immense contribution to Gaelic football.

Faoin bhrat Phadraig agus Aingle na Glóire | Under the protection of St Patrick and the Angels of Glory.

Frank graciously agreed to be interviewed; his responses were used to create a bio for our dinner dance souvenir journal, excerpts of which we share below.

Frank McGuigan (R.I.P.)

County Tyrone Gaelic footballing legend, Frank McGuigan, was born in Ardboe in 1954, the third of 12 children of Annie and Tommy McGuigan. Frank had a hearty but humble upbringing by the shores of Lough Neagh. The family’s two-room stone cottage, like most of that era, was yet to have running water or electricity, and was a three-mile walk to the elementary school. In the summer months, Frank and his many siblings played outside until dark, before bedding down for the night in the loft.

Young Frank began to develop a passion for Gaelic football, training regularly at his beloved club, Ardboe O’Donovan Rossa, named after the Fenian revolutionary. Come rain or shine, Frank put in the hours to hone his footballing skills, practicing headers on the trusty ash tree in the yard, and catching the ball as it rebounded down the cottage roof, eventually earning himself a place on the Tyrone Minor team. It wasn’t very long before he caught the eye of the Tyrone Senior panel.

Frank holds the unusual distinction of playing in both the Ulster Minor and Senior Championships. It is widely agreed that his outstanding performance as a full forward in his first Senior game against Derry significantly contributed to Tyrone’s win. For the best part of a decade, Frank McGuigan was a regular fixture in the Red Hand’s engine room, a rhythmic and strategic player whose vision and sublime finishes earned him the nickname ‘King’ Frank apparently first coined, or should that be crowned, by the popular Coalisland sports journalist, Adrian Logan.

1973 was a golden year for Tyrone football, with the Seniors proudly lifting the Ulster Cup, their first championship win since 1957. This victory against Down was particularly notable as Tyrone also won the Ulster Minor and Under-21championships that same year: a triple success. Frank was virtually unmarkable, ratcheting up point after point using both feet as he boldly took the “free shots of gold.” Entering enemy territory to get possession of the ball was par for the course for Tyrone’s young and fearless captain. It was no coincidence that Ardboe O’Donovan Rossa also swept the scoreboards from 1971-1973, resulting in four championship medals.

Frank was still only 22 years old when he flew to New York in 1977, to tog out for the All Stars. However, something told Frank to stay on after his teammates headed back to JFK. A short time later, he met his soon-to-be American wife, Geraldine, marrying the following year and going on to have six children, Frank, Brian, Tommy, Kristin, Caitlin, and Shay. In 1983, they left the States for good to settle down in Ardboe and, not surprisingly, Frank headed straight for the Gaelic pitch! The very next year, he was part of the line-up for Tyrone in the Ulster Final of 1984. Competing against the Orchard County, Frank turned out the performance of a lifetime, scoring eleven points from open play, five on each foot, and fi**ed one over to top off the bonanza! Frank modestly recalls, “No forward can do anything without a ball. I had good men around me and this made my job of getting a few scores so much easier.”

Influential sporting judges concurred it was “one of the greatest individual performances in the modern G.A.A. era.” The same year, Frank, now 29, earned his first All Star. In November of 1984, Frank’s sporting career was tragically cut short by injuries sustained in a car accident. A slow and painful recovery ensued, Frank, not used to taking it easy, kept his spirits up as best he could and once back on his feet, took a job at Forbes Bar, an establishment now run by his son Brian, also a distinguished Tyrone footballer in his own right, and part of the 2003 Sam Maguire winning squad.

Despite his disappointment and considerable emotional anguish, Frank was able to look back at his football career fondly and with justifiable pride, forging many great friendships through the game and enjoying the opportunity to travel when possible. One of Frank’s mottos was, “Live every day as if it’s your last.”

He also enjoyed a competitive round of golf with his sons and sons-in-law, regularly going for a sauna and swim, and placing the odd bet at the turf accountants, and of course, spending time with his best achievement of all, his six children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. It’s no surprise that he passed his talent and enthusiasm for Gaelic football down to his grandchildren. Frank could be seen cheering them on from the sidelines.

Still an avid sports enthusiast and proponent of grassroots football, Frank continued to attend club and county matches and admired the insights of legendary football manager Art McRory (R.I.P.) and veteran commentator, Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh (R.I.P.).

Considered one of the greatest Gaelic footballers of all time, Frank McGuigan humbly attributed his success to a combination of natural talent, sheer grit, perseverance, and a can-do attitude.

Rest in eternal peace dear Frank | Ar dheis de go raibh a anam.
