We’re proud to share that our Executive Director, Christopher Hanway, served as vice chair of the 36th annual United Nations International Day of Older Persons (UNIDOP) event yesterday!

This year’s theme, “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives,” explored how we can adapt our systems and communities to support people as they live longer.

At Riis Settlement, we’re committed to helping older adults age in place, maintain their independence, and remain active, connected members of their communities.

Thank you to everyone who joined the conversation. Here’s to building communities where people of every age can thrive.

It was another great summer at Riis!

Our youth spent the summer learning, creating, going on trips, making new friends, and having plenty of fun along the way. We wrapped things up with Riis Culture Day, where youth from across our program sites came together for a fun-filled day of art exhibits and performances inspired by Cinderella, The Wiz, The Princess and the Frog, Encanto, and Wicked.

Congrats to our Culture Day winners: PS 166 (1st place), CS 111 (2nd place), and PS 171 (3rd place) — and a big round of applause to all of our youth and staff who made the summer such a memorable one.

Wishing all of our young people a great start to the new school year!

We loved seeing you all at our Back-to-School events at the Astoria Love FEC, Ravenswood Cornerstone, and Queensbridge Community Centers! A huge thank you to everyone who made this year’s giveaways bigger and better than ever, with over 400 guests in attendance to enjoy choosing new school supplies, learning about resources, and picking up sweet treats along the way. 🍦Good luck to our students in this new school year. 📚✏️

Our NNORC program had an amazing time on their overnight trip to Baltimore! Day one kicked off with a scenic cruise, followed by dinner at the Golden Corral — complete with birthday celebrations for one of our members. Day two brought more sightseeing and shopping at Arundel Mills mall. Trips like these give our older adults a chance to connect and make memories together. Here’s to many more adventures ahead!
