From NY to Edinburgh! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Scholarship Plus junior Toran is spending his semester abroad in Scotland at Queen Margaret University, where he’s studying Business & Management, and specifically global business, finance, and cross-cultural management. What better way to learn this than in another part of the globe, immersed in a new culture? The views aren’t bad either.

This is PLUSTravel in action through the generosity of Beverly Allan Starke, an SPlus community member committed to equitable experiences beyond the college classroom, and even the U.S. She is helping first-gen students get out in the world where we all discover new sides of ourselves.

Want to help more SPlus scholars go further? Consider making a gift to to help fund first-gen scholars’ self-discovery.

For 20 new Scholarship Plus scholars, college is about to finally get real! Before they head off to campuses across the country, we came together for our annual College Transition Day dedicated to helping them feel prepared, confident, and supported for what’s ahead.

Through interactive activities and honest conversations, scholars explored everything from understanding themselves as learners and managing their time to navigating campus resources, building community, advocating for themselves, and finding support when things get tough (cue SPlus).

And, of course, one of the best parts: hearing directly from older scholars who shared the advice and lessons they wish they had known when they first started college.

Our biggest takeaway was you don’t have to have college all figured out on day one (or 300...). Know yourself, use your resources, ask for help, and remember—you have a whole Scholarship Plus community behind you. 💙

“Surround yourself with people who see the potential in you.” Thank you, Brooke Gunnell, for organizing a beautifully immersive day at Partners Group. You, Robin Shelley, and Zach Chen are always such strong advocates for first-gen scholars, and we’re thrilled that Anuj Jain joined, as well, reminding all of these young professionals that “no one is expecting mastery; coming in with humility is key.”

How good do the scholars look in that boardroom?

In today’s job market, standing out means more than having a polished résumé.

Daisy Saldana joined Summer Masterclass to help scholars strengthen their résumés and cover letters while navigating an increasingly AI-driven hiring landscape. With her experience supporting first-generation college students, Daisy encouraged scholars to communicate their unique experiences with confidence. Lean in to who you are.

Thank you, Daisy, for equipping our scholars with tools to tell their stories and stand out in the hiring process. 💛

Don’t worry: interviews aren’t about having all the right answers. It’s more about the questions you ask, the honesty in the moment (“great question, let me think about that...”), and telling your own story with confidence.

Scholarship Plus alum Shaquille Zheng returned to Summer Masterclass—this time as a guest speaker—to help scholars prepare for one of the most important parts of the job search. By breaking down different interview formats and sharing practical strategies, Shaq reminded scholars that preparation and authenticity go a long (LONG) way.

Thank you, Shaq, for coming full circle and investing in the next generation of Scholarship Plus scholars 💛

Your LinkedIn profile is more than an online résumé. It’s your professional story AND introduction.

2019 Scholarship Plus cohort alum and ex-LinkedIn SWE Lawrence Lin returned to Masterclass to help scholars strengthen their online presence, and make the most of one of today’s most powerful networking tools. From highlighting experiences to showcasing strengths, Lawrence encouraged scholars to build profiles that reflect who they are... and where they’re headed.

Thank you, Lawrence, for giving back to the Scholarship Plus community and helping the next generation of scholars put their best foot forward.

☀️ Sunny weather, yummy eats, plenty of games — but nothing ever beats the company. SPlus’ annual Summer Gathering brought together scholars, alums & Associate Board members for an evening of laughter and reconnection in Central Park. Scholar Bingo never gets old! Riiight? 😜 💙

Back by popular demand after her webinar about filing taxes in April, Laethitia P. took financial literacy to the next level with: “From [H.S.] Diploma to Dollars: Building Real-World Money Skills”.

Thank you, Laethitia, for always digging in to the details and staying for every question. You are a beacon in a murky and intimidating world, and you give students confidence and agency 🙏

What if creating a better future starts with believing it’s possible?

This year’s Summer Masterclass welcomed back former Scholarship Plus team member Sara, who invited scholars to imagine the kind of world they want to live in—and the role they can play in building it. Through conversations about civic engagement, community, and collective care, scholars were encouraged to see that meaningful change begins with everyday action.

Thank you, Sara, for inspiring our scholars to dream boldly, lead with purpose, and remember that each of us has the power to make a difference.

The strongest thing you can do is ask for help.

SPlus Board Member and NYU McSilver Institute learning & development specialist Dr. Jayson Jones returned to Masterclass to talk about one of the most underrated skills for success: self-advocacy.

Jayson always delivers with honesty, humor, and real-world wisdom, and challenges scholars to move past pride, to seek support when they need it, and build strong relationships before a crisis arises (enter Scholarship Plus).

From navigating college systems to speaking up for themselves, scholars left with practical tools—and a reminder that asking for help isn’t a weakness. It’s a strength.

Thank you, Jayson, for showing our scholars what self-advocacy looks like in action. 💛
