ANNOUNCING OUR 2026 JEFFREY KROESSLER STUDENT RESEARCH AWARD WINNER

Elise LaGraize is an architectural designer and preservationist from Lafayette, Louisiana. She is a graduate of Louisiana State University and recently received her Master’s degree in Historic Preservation from Pratt Institute. Her research blends her architectural background with historic preservation, exploring alternative models of preservation that integrate contemporary design.

Elise’s thesis, What Remains: Preserving Industrial Memory at the Lidgerwood Site, proposes a post-demolition preservation model for the site of the Lidgerwood Manufacturing Complex in Red Hook that uses new design to reinforce industrial continuity, labor memory, and working waterfront culture rather than relying on the retention of physical structures. By combining heritage interpretation, speculative design, and community-informed programming, this thesis demonstrates how redevelopment can be a preservation tool for industrial heritage in urban waterfront neighborhoods facing gentrification pressures. Congratulations Elise!

Thank you to all who have applied and our 2026 Kroessler jury for their dedication to this year's process. Join us on Tuesday, June 18th for our Grassroots Preservation Awards to honor Elise and our Grassroots Award recipients for their achievements. Limited tickets are available; click the link to purchase.

Since 2000, the Historic Districts Council has honored more than 150 individuals, community groups, coalitions, elected officials, and press outlets for their achievements. This year, HDC will celebrate over two decades of the tradition to recognize, honor, and encourage public participation in the preservation process.

Successful historic preservation efforts in New York City require collaboration amongst many parties, including the public, government agencies, and private sector entities. Grassroots Award recipients work on the ground, in public service, in communities, and online to bring attention and resources to saving the heart and soul of New York City. We are pleased to announce that the 2026 honorees are:

Beverley Square West Association
Merchant's House Museum
The Sandy Ground Historical Society

John Freeman Gill, Friend from the Media Award

Vicki Weiner, Mickey Murphy Lifetime Achievement Award

We will also present the 2026 Jeffrey Kroessler Student Research Award to this year's recipient(s). As part of HDC’s 2026 Conference, MAKING IT IN NEW YORK: The Preservation of Manufacturing, HDC is pleased to present a special screening of the award-winning documentary film, Made in Brooklyn (1994), a look inside Brooklyn’s industrial lofts and factories where thousands of people make products that range from chocolate syrup to gargoyles.

When the film was released, the famed urbanist and author Jane Jacobs said, "No subject could be more important...not only for New York, but for all American cities. This is the most lucid explanation of America's economic self-crippling and the direction to take to overcome it."

More than 30 years later, the film remains timely as we examine New York City’s ever changing industrial landscape. Following the screening, the filmmaker, Isabel Hill, and HDC’s Executive Director Frampton Tolbert, will have a discussion on what has changed and what has remained the same in Brooklyn’s historic manufacturing neighborhoods in the intervening decades.

Stuyvesant North is a part of the larger Bedford-Stuyvesant, with a collection of rare Queen Anne, Neo-Grec and Romanesque Revival brownstones built between 1860 and 1902, as well as important apartment buildings, houses of worship, and commercial structures. Many of the builders were designed by some of Brooklyn's well known architects such as Magnus E. Dahlander, Frederick B. Langston, Axel Hedman and Amzi Hill. While some parts of Bedford-Stuyvesant have been designated as historic districts, there is still a collection of impressive buildings worthy of preservation.

The tour led by Morgan Munsey, historian and founding member of the Stuyvesant North Preservation Society (SNPS), focuses on the area between Hancock and Madison streets and Lewis and Stuyvesant Avenues, which together form the proposed Stuyvesant North Historic District. SNPS is committed to safeguarding the historic residential character of northern Stuyvesant Heights. The walking tour will focus on the unique history of the neighborhood; its distinct architectural character; and the host of well-known people who have inhabited its homes, such as paint magnate Benjamin Moore, author Wallace Bruce, illustrator Frances Isabelle Lockwood, and William C. Bolton of the Bolton and Liggett Drug Stores.

Conference Tour- Brooklyn Navy Yard: Past, Present & Future

Saturday, May 16, 2026
2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Founded in 1801, the Yard was once the nation’s premier naval shipyard, building, repairing, and outfitting vessels from the War of 1812 through the Cold War. Today, the Yard’s historic industrial landscape has been repurposed to support 450+ businesses that employ over 11,000 people in manufacturing, technology, and skilled crafts. On this two-hour walking tour, we will explore the Yard’s rich naval and labor history through examining historical documents, listening to oral histories from workers and sailors, and visiting historic buildings, including Civil War-era machine shops, the Yard’s museum and visitor center at BLDG 92, and a working dry dock still used today for ship repair. We will also learn about the Yard’s business ecosystem, community programs, and workforce development today, and the future plans for the Yard’s development.

This tour is part of our 2026 Conference: MAKING IT IN NEW YORK, The Preservation of Manufacturing.

PRESERVATION SCHOOL: TERMINAL WAREHOUSE

Tuesday, May 19, 2026
6:00 - 7:00 PM
Via Zoom

Join Charu Chaudhry, HDC Board Member and Associate Principal at , for this class about the restoration and adaptive reuse of Terminal Warehouse. Terminal Warehouse, one of New York City’s most significant early 20th-century industrial buildings, was originally constructed in the 1890s and expanded in the early 1900s. It once served as a vital hub for the storage and movement of goods along Manhattan’s waterfront.

Participants will examine the challenges and opportunities involved in restoring a massive, deteriorating landmark for contemporary use. The class will highlight how the firm addressed complex conditions, including restoring two enormous arched doorways through which freight trains once rumbled, as well as challenges of introducing new elements in existing walls.
