As we commemorate the founding of our nation 250 years ago, we take time to remember the Irish who have made contributions to our nation's founding as well as the many who emigrated from Ireland to America over the years, particularly those during the famine.

Membership chair Des Flynn ran into fellow educator and Irish history expert Hilary Beirne at a Roscommon gathering recently, and on display was a bronze pair of children's shoes representing the arduous path walked by those fleeing Ireland (including many children) to come to America, with many dying along the way. This is part of the Global Irish Famine Way project. A pair of these bronze shoes will be installed at a memorial site in Staten Island later this year.

You can learn more about the bronze shoes and other important Irish contributions to America at Irish America 250. 🇺🇸 🇮🇪
