Life has not been kind to Kenneth lately.

After losing his job, Kenneth suffered another devastating loss — his wife passed away. Since then, he’s been struggling with homelessness while trying to hold onto his sobriety through unimaginable grief and hardship.

Like so many people on the streets, Kenneth has been staying in shelters that often feel anything but safe. He shared how difficult it is to stay sober in an environment filled with drug use, chaos, noise, and unsafe conditions. Imagine trying to heal while surrounded by the very things you’re fighting to escape.

Today, we were able to provide Kenneth with food, a battery pack (Unite To Light), a sleeping bag (The Sleeping Bag Project New York City) , and resources for support — but more importantly, we listened. We saw him. We reminded him that he is not forgotten.

This is only the beginning.

Our Backpacks For The Street team will now be working closely with Kenneth to help him find safer shelter that supports — not jeopardizes — his sobriety. We’ll also help connect him with an outpatient program, grief support, and the services he needs to begin rebuilding his life one step at a time.

Homelessness is not always about poor choices. Sometimes it’s grief. Sometimes it’s loss. Sometimes life breaks someone down faster than they can recover alone.

Please keep Kenneth in your thoughts tonight.

And please remember — compassion can change the direction of someone’s life.

Jim is a Veteran who struggles with PTSD and serious mental health challenges. Today, we found him sitting outside an abandoned storefront — a place he says he once worked at and helped build. He sat there hoping the company would return one day and give him his job back. But the building has clearly been abandoned for a very long time.

Like many Veterans experiencing homelessness, Jim feels forgotten by the country he once served. He spoke openly about feeling overwhelmed, hopeless, and without support.

Veterans facing homelessness are at significantly higher risk for mental health and substance use challenges. For some, mental health struggles contribute to housing instability. For others, the trauma, stress, and uncertainty of homelessness make existing conditions even worse. Without stable housing, even the best mental health treatment can be difficult to maintain.

As a Veteran, Jim carries unique burdens and experiences that many people may never fully understand. But no Veteran should feel abandoned or alone.

Backpacks For The Street is working to support Jim and help connect him with the services, care, and stable housing he urgently needs. We’ve seen firsthand how life can begin to change once Veterans receive consistent support and safe housing. Hope can return. Healing can begin.

One Veteran we previously helped told us:

“When I finally got the help I needed, everything changed. It gave me hope that I could survive, that my life wasn’t over yet. It saved my life.”

Please keep Jim — and all Veterans struggling with homelessness and PTSD — in your thoughts today. Every act of compassion matters.

At her request, we will not share her name or where we met.

But she wants her story told because she is one of many Asian immigrants who came to the United States hoping for a better life.

Between the language barrier of not speaking English fluently and the struggle to find stable work, she is now living on the streets while trying to raise enough money to hire a lawyer for her immigration case.

Backpacks For The Street is working to connect her with organizations that specifically support Asian immigrants and, hopefully, help her access the services and resources available to her.

She did not choose homelessness. When she arrived here, she was promised a job and trusted people who said they would keep her safe.

We will continue following her situation and do what we can to support her in her pursuit of a safer and more stable future.

After years of facing homelessness and moving from shelter to shelter, our longtime client Rodney has finally found a place to call his own—a brand new apartment in a senior living community.

“We can’t have a stove because some older folks aren’t safe with them, but everything is all new. The building is new. I’ve never had a place like this before,” Rodney shared.

“You’ve been with me through all of this. Your help got me through this.”

Backpacks For The Street has stood by Rodney every step of the way, and we couldn’t be more grateful to see him reach this moment.

This is why we do what we do. While our backpack program helps us connect with people and meet immediate needs, it’s the long-term relationships—the trust, the consistency, the human connection—that truly create change.

Real impact happens when we walk alongside someone on their journey to the next chapter.

Homeless since the age of 9…

Let that sink in.

Miguel was just a child when he was abandoned by his parents. From that moment on, survival became his everyday reality. He moved from group home to foster home, often running away and finding himself back on the streets — alone.

By his mid-teens, he was doing whatever he could to survive.

And for the next 40 years… that never changed.

No stability. No safety. No place to call home.

Until now.

Miguel just turned 50, and for the first time in his life, he’s on the verge of having his own apartment. He’s already been approved for housing — something many of us take for granted. The only thing standing in the way is getting a state ID, which is expected in the next couple of weeks.

We’ve had the privilege of getting to know Miguel through Backpacks For The Street. He is kind, humble, and always looking for honest ways to earn money. No matter what he’s been through, he still greets us with a smile and a light in his eyes.

And now, he’s ready for a new chapter.

A real bed. A door that locks. A place to feel safe.

But transitions like this aren’t easy — especially when homelessness is all you’ve ever known.

That’s where we come in.

💙 Let’s show Miguel he’s not alone.
As he prepares to move into housing, he will need basic essentials to start over — things many of us don’t think twice about.

If you’d like to support Miguel’s fresh start, whether through donations, supplies, or simply sharing his story, it would mean the world.

Because everyone deserves a second chance.
And Miguel has waited 40 years for his.

Jackie and her husband Josh have been facing homelessness for quite some time. Recently, they arrived in New York with little more than the clothes on their backs.

Our team stepped in to ensure they received essential clothing and support during this difficult transition.

Right now, Josh is dealing with ongoing health challenges and has been in and out of the hospital over the past few weeks. We’re staying closely connected, checking in regularly, and doing everything we can to support them through this.

Above all, we want Jackie and Josh to know they’re not alone. They have a community behind them, resources they can rely on, and people they can reach out to whenever they need help.

Ronnie, also known as Zee, has been on and off the streets for years. Some nights he finds a place in a shelter, but most nights he’s out on the streets.

This isn’t the life anyone imagined for him at this stage—but he hasn’t given up. He’s still out there, still trying, still looking for a way forward.

Something as simple as a backpack can make a real difference. It’s not just a bag—it’s a way to carry essentials, keep belongings safe, and hold onto a sense of dignity and independence.

We’re collecting backpacks filled with basic necessities to support people like Ronnie. If you’re able to donate or help, you’re giving more than supplies—you’re giving someone a little more stability and hope.

Let’s show up for those who are still fighting every day. 💙

Shamika shared something that really stayed with me.

She’s been homeless for the past 7–8 months and is currently living in a shelter. Because the facilities aren’t always adequate, she sometimes relies on the kindness of others just to do something as basic as showering. No one should have to navigate that.

She’s also faced some harsh and unwarranted treatment simply because of her situation—but that’s not the whole story.

What stood out most to her—and honestly, to me too—is how many people in New York have shown real humanity. Small acts of kindness, people willing to help without hesitation… it’s made a difference.

Now, Shamika is taking the next step. She’ll be working with our Backpacks For The Street team to continue improving her situation and building forward.

A reminder: people are more than their circumstances. And compassion, especially in a city this big, still matters.

This is Anna. She’s going through a really difficult time right now, facing both housing and medical challenges.

Right now, the most urgent need is getting her a walker so she can move safely and comfortably—we’re actively working on that. We’re also helping her get settled into a family shelter so she has a stable place to stay.

If you’re able to support, share, or keep her in your thoughts, it truly means a lot. Every bit of help makes a difference. 💛
