Introducing Our Board Member, Heather!

Heather attended The College of Staten Island High School for International Studies, where she met Brianna, marking the beginning of a deep and lasting friendship.

She went on to study English Education (Grades 7–12) at the CUNY College of Staten Island, where she earned her bachelor’s degree. She then continued her education there, receiving her master’s degree as a Special Education Generalist for students in Grades 7–12. Today, she is a tenured middle school teacher.

Outside of her profession, Heather is a dedicated animal advocate and shelter volunteer. She has volunteered with animal rescue organizations for the past five years and has fostered and adopted.

Nicole Gatto serves as the Treasurer of the EMT Brianna Louise Sison Memorial Foundation. As Brianna’s former mentee in EMT school, she is honored to help preserve Brianna’s legacy by supporting future EMS providers. Nicole was the recipient of her EMT class’s Staten Island University Hospital EMT Scholarship, the Frank W. Geib Memorial EMT Student of the Year Award, and the Staten Island University Hospital Legacy Award. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology the College of Staten Island and plans to continue her career in the medical field after graduation.

Meet our secretary, Nicholas A. Portera! Nicholas is a lifelong resident of Staten Island, New York, and now resides in Mahwah, New Jersey. He has served with the Fire Department of the City of New York for nine years. He currently works as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in Division 8, Brooklyn North, where he provides frontline emergency care.

In addition to his professional service, Nicholas has been actively involved in Volunteer EMS organizations. He most recently served as President of Volunteer Heart Ambulance, contributed grant writing efforts for North Shore Rescue Squad, and currently serves as Corresponding Secretary for Bellerose Rescue in Queens.

Nicholas is a certified instructor with the American Heart Association and is pursuing a college degree in Emergency Management. He was recognized by the New York City Regional Emergency Medical Service Council with a Guardian of Life Award at its National EMS Week Awards Dinner for his service to voluntary and volunteer EMS agencies during the COVID-19 activation.
