Meet our secretary, Nicholas A. Portera! Nicholas is a lifelong resident of Staten Island, New York, and now resides in Mahwah, New Jersey. He has served with the Fire Department of the City of New York for nine years. He currently works as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in Division 8, Brooklyn North, where he provides frontline emergency care.

In addition to his professional service, Nicholas has been actively involved in Volunteer EMS organizations. He most recently served as President of Volunteer Heart Ambulance, contributed grant writing efforts for North Shore Rescue Squad, and currently serves as Corresponding Secretary for Bellerose Rescue in Queens.

Nicholas is a certified instructor with the American Heart Association and is pursuing a college degree in Emergency Management. He was recognized by the New York City Regional Emergency Medical Service Council with a Guardian of Life Award at its National EMS Week Awards Dinner for his service to voluntary and volunteer EMS agencies during the COVID-19 activation.

This EMS week is a heavy one for all of us, but it is also a beautiful reminder of the incredible legacy Brianna left behind. Being an EMT wasn’t just a job for Brianna, it was her true passion, and she poured her heart into serving her community every single day.

While we use EMS Week to celebrate and thank all of the dedicated first responders who answer the call, we also hold Brianna’s memory extra close. Her impact in this field was undeniable, and we still look back with so much pride. Back in May 2024 Brianna was honored as EMT of the Year.

Brianna’s spirit lives on in every connection she made and every life she touched. To all the EMTs and paramedics out there, thank you for your sacrifice, your passion, and your dedication to keeping us safe!
