Born weighing up to 60–70 pounds, baby manatees rely entirely on their mothers for the first 1–2 years of life 🤍

They nurse underwater and quickly learn essential behaviors—like surfacing to breathe every few minutes and grazing on seagrass, their primary food source. These early stages are critical for survival, especially in shallow coastal habitats where human activity is highest ✨

With slow reproductive rates and strong mother-calf bonds, every calf matters for the future of the species 🌊

The bay nettle (Chrysaora chesapeakei) is a jellyfish species native to the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding estuarine waters of the U.S. East Coast 🪼

It is most abundant during the warmer months, typically appearing from May through October. Unlike many oceanic jellyfish, the bay nettle is adapted to brackish environments and is usually found in waters with salinity between 10–16 parts per thousand—significantly lower than typical seawater.

Adults can reach about 8 inches (20 cm) in bell diameter and possess 24 long tentacles that may extend several feet. Their coloration varies with salinity: individuals in fresher upper-bay waters are often milky white, while those in saltier areas tend to display reddish-brown or purplish stripes.

The sting of C. chesapeakei is moderately painful but generally not dangerous unless an allergic reaction occurs. As predators of zooplankton and small organisms, bay nettles play an important role in the estuarine food web.
