SCALEAfrica

SCALEAfrica www.scaleafrica.org SCALEAfrica is a non-profit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization building schools and futures through the power of design.

SCALEAfrica is a non-profit organization designing and constructing green school infrastructure in rural sub-Saharan Africa. Through culturally-responsive, sustainable architecture and an active community participation model, SCALEAfrica leverages the power of design to increase access to education, boost local economies, and preserve the natural environment. Our building programs focus on the con

struction of classrooms, libraries, teacher housing and sanitation facilities for public schools and partner non-profit institutions. Constructed by the community with site-specific and renewable resources, our built work actively demonstrates that design in resource-challenged environments is an essential, not additive, tool in maximizing positive social, economic and environmental impacts. Our mission is predicated on the reality that when sustainable design is at its most effective it enhances public and private programs, increases the measurable impact of those programs and creates more than just access to essentials like education – it facilitates participation and positive interaction that build stronger communities.

A little paint touch up for Vinza School! Amazing to see the building two years into use and in such good shape. Testament to our Project Manager Geoff Renou’s considerable gifts, the talents of Jonathan and team (pictured here) and the care of Head Teacher William Phiri.

Brief article on the focus Clinton Foundation places on women and girls and a nice mention of SCALEAfrica's Clinton Global Initiative commitment - WiSH Initiative. Have a read!

But even in the U.S. girls are affected in ways that have to do with gender. “Here, in communities of color and in impoverished communities, if a single mom has a daughter, she’ll be the one expected to stay home and take care of the kids while Mom works an extra shift,” Joslyn says. “So…

Fun feature on Erinn McGurn and SCALEAfrica in the newest issue of KAZOO magazine! For their Architecture Issue, we designed a snow fort - all with the aim to inspire girls to be builders of their own dreams. Huge thanks to Erin Bried for creating a print magazine for girls that aren't afraid to make some noise!

It's been a busy, productive 2016 here at SCALEAfrica! As we reflect back, it's amazing what's been accomplished because of your support.

To see 270 children at Vinza learning in light, bright classrooms, using ZeduPads for lessons and games, and receiving a healthy meal at school is what it's all about. The teachers are continuing to receive teacher training and our data on test scores is showing that improved content and teacher support is having a big impact.

Our Phase 2 plans at Vinza - to build 5 more classrooms and an arts/girls leadership lab - will allow us to bring another 150 students into the Vinza fold - bringing the total number of kids learning in SCALEAfrica designed classrooms to well over 2000 - truly exciting!

To see the transformation of Vinza School from a dilapidated grass shed to dignified, lively community, watch our new short, 3 minute film - BUILDING FUTURES Part 2 on Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/195686070

We also rolled out our newest venture which was announced on stage at CGI in September - the WiSH Initiative: Increasing Access to Education for Girls in Zambia Through WiSH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene). The purpose of the WiSH Initiative is to ensure that girls in Zambia have access to clean water, sanitation designed with their health and safety in mind, and basic hygiene programs - with the aim of keeping them coming to school. Construction on our first WiSH 12-stall sanitation project is already underway, slated to be completed this month!

If you haven't yet donated to SCALEAfrica in 2016, we hope you'll do so now and help support the WiSH Initiative by going to www.scaleafrica.org!

Thank you for your continued support of SCALEAfrica and the communities we serve. We hope you have a peaceful and joyous New Year!

Best wishes,
Erinn & Guy
