In Springfield, Ohio, churches are helping Haitian parents do something no parent should have to do: name someone to care for their children in case ICE takes them first.

A federal judge cleared the way this month for Haiti's Temporary Protected Status to end. So the parishes got to work — lining up temporary caregivers, building a support program for families left behind after a detention.

On August 14, about 75 people gathered outside City Hall. Many carried signs with three words on them: Love your neighbor.

Not a slogan. An instruction.

Pope Leo XIV has written to priests asking them to respect the liturgy that came out of the Second Vatican Council.

It's part of a pattern this summer. He's been teaching the council's documents in his Wednesday catecheses. He asked the women religious of the LCWR to share what they've learned about synodality. He confirmed the excommunication of a society founded in defiance of the council's reforms.

The message is consistent: Vatican II wasn't a moment that passed. It's unfinished work.

The people of God - gathered, participating, fully awake.

A Jewish scholar now leads Catholic biblical study.

Amy-Jill Levine has been elected the first Jewish president of the Catholic Biblical Association in its 90-year history. She wrote The Misunderstood Jew. The Bible With and Without Jesus. The Jewish Annotated New Testament. In 2019, she became the first Jewish scholar to teach the New Testament at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome.

"I have been carrying on a love affair with the Catholic Church since I was 7 years old," she says, "and that hasn't stopped."

Here's why this matters: reading scripture with Jewish eyes recovers what was always there—the language, the context, the women whose names later editors let slip out of the text.

Nostra Aetate made this possible. Vatican II keeps opening doors.

1,300 leaders of U.S. women religious gathered in Orlando this month. The Leadership Conference of Women Religious is 70 years old.

"With your vitality, your witness of a life centered on Jesus, you can contribute to waking up the world," Pope Leo XIV told them.

They already have been. For decades.

Sr. Simona Brambilla - the first woman religious in history to oversee religious life for the whole church - sent her welcome. Sr. Nathalie Becquart of the Synod of Bishops gave the keynote on walking together.

This is what women's leadership in the church looks like when nobody waits for permission.

Two dozen Catholics stood outside EPA headquarters and prayed.

They carried a letter with more than 2,440 signatures—one bishop, 506 women religious, and thousands of the faithful—asking the agency to remember what it was built to do: protect people and protect creation.

"Today we urge the Environmental Protection Agency to remember its mission," said Franciscan Sr. Marie Lucey.

Care for God's creation is not a side issue. It's Catholic Social Teaching. And prayer, when it moves us into the street, is faith in action.

Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero was 25. He was driving to work in Biddeford, Maine.

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was driving his crew to a construction site in Houston.

Both were killed by ICE officers within a single week. Both were on their way to earn a living.

Catholics gathered at vigils. Immigrant advocates called for independent investigations. Communities lit candles and asked for accountability.

The dignity of work. The dignity of every person. Solidarity. These are not abstractions—they are the names of two men.
