Kehila Kedosha Janina

Kehila Kedosha Janina The Official page of Kehila Kedosha Janina Synagogue and Museum We welcome all people to come celebrate and share in this journey with us.

Kehila Kedosha Janina (the Holy Congregation of Janina) is the only Romaniote synagogue in the Western Hemisphere. Romaniote Jews are a unique community of Jewish people whose history in Greece dates back over two thousand years to the time of the Roman Empire. The Romaniotes are historically distinct from the Sephardim, who settled in Greece after the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. Kehila Kedosha Janina is a NYC designated landmark, and continues to hold services every Saturday morning as well as for all Jewish holidays. In addition, it houses a museum about Greek Jewry that is open to the public every Sunday, as well as by appointment. The museum serves as a repository for both Romaniote and Sephardic history, especially on the Lower East Side, and hosts many educational events including lectures, book signings, movie screenings, and concerts. We are a small but tight-knit community, and we continually open our doors to visitors to provide both a spiritual home as well as a place to learn about Greek Jewish history. This Greek Jewish Festival is the our latest effort to not only preserve our unique culture, but to also celebrate and develop new ways of expressing what it means to be a Romaniote or Sephardic Jew.

🕯️ Three years since October 7.

Today we remember those we lost, those who sacrificed, those who survived, and all those whose lives were changed forever.

It’s our responsibility to make sure the memories of those who have fallen do not simply fade into history, but continue to guide how we live and face the many challenges that come with being proud of our Jewishness.

After spending nearly a year there, she was liberated and reunited with her uncle, brother, and sister in the Belgian Congo. Eventually, Stella immi...

Hag Sameah! Thank you to everyone who joined our amazing “Athens Meets Aleppo” Sukkot Party last night! It was an evening of Downtown Jewish Unity featuring 9 different synagogues and Jewish community organizations with sounds, traditions, and flavors from Greek, Syrian, and other Jewish communities. We enjoyed delicious food, danced to amazing music in Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, and more, and celebrated the holiday with incredible energy and unity. We were also honored to welcome Eyal David, Deputy Consul General of Israel in New York, who has family heritage from Ioannina and Aleppo! Thank you to all our partners who made the event possible, and our very own Avram Pengas who played riveting Greek music!
