Viewpoint: Why Racism is a Public Health Crisis

Experiencing racism, whether overt or subtle, can lead to chronic stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders. The constant stress from facing discrimination and microaggressions creates a state of heightened vigilance and fear, which has detrimental effects on mental health.

New York, N.Y. Racism, a pervasive and insidious force in society, extends far beyond social injustice and discrimination. It is, unequivocally, a public health crisis that affects the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of millions. Recognizing racism as a public health crisis is essential for addressing its widespread impact on health disparities, access to care, and overall community health. This essay explores the reasons why racism must be understood and tackled as a significant public health issue

I was totally shocked and overwhelmed to receive the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award this evening signed by Joe Biden - for my philanthropic work over the decades in Indonesia with orphans, teen mothers, and young global leaders.

The award came with a lapel pen and a signed letter that said, “The American story depends not on any one of us, not on some of us, but on all of us. I congratulate you on taking it upon yourself to contribute to the public good, and I'm proud to present you with the President's Lifetime Achievement award in recognition of your 4,000 hours of service to this great Nation.

Throughout our country's history, the American story has been strengthened by those who combine an optimism about what can be with the resilience to turn that vision into reality.

I know I'm not alone in recognizing that those who are willing to step up and volunteer in service of community and country are essential to the ongoing work of forming our more perfect union.

By sharing your time and passion, you are helping discover and deliver solutions to the challenges we face - solutions that we need now more than ever. We are living in a moment that calls for hope and light and love. Hope for our futures, light to see our way forward, and love for one another. Through your service, you are providing all three.

On behalf of the American people, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to you for your volunteer leadership, and I encourage you to continue to answer the call to serve. The country is counting on you.”

The Presidential Lifetime Achievement Awards exist to recognize those individuals for their commitment to cultivating lasting change. The Presidential Lifetime Achievement Awards are an annual event held to honor those in our nation who exhibit outstanding character, work ethic, and dedication to their communities.

Special thanks to our foundation’s Global Advisor Vanny Tousignant who made this all possible!

Our Story

The J. Luce Foundation Young Global Leadership Initiative (Website) was launched in 2016 as an enhanced Internship Program to empower young global leaders wishing to better humanity to think, write, speak, organize, and utilize social media more effectively. The initiative consists of several tracks including Young Global Leaders, a 200-hour commitment to serving humanity & professional training and development, to Sr. Young Global Leaders, graduates of the Initiative who remain to assist the foundation and mentor new YGLs. Many move into higher organizational positions such as Staff, Board, or Global Adviser.

The Initiative includes leadership opportunities such as the New York Global Leaders Lions Club (Facebook), the nascent J. Luce Foundation Toastmasters Club (Facebook), as well as our own Luce Leadership Experience focusing on international humanitarian trips to countries such as Greece, Indonesia and Jamaica.

New York Global Leaders Lions Club

Launched on February 5, 2016 – after three years of discussions – a Lions Club to serve members of our Board of Directors, Global Advisers, as well as Luce Leaders, Fellows, and Scholars. We now have access to 5,600 Lions members in New York City/Long Island.
