The Ackerman Institute's Multiracial Family Project

The Ackerman Institute's Multiracial Family Project Helping couples and families make sense of the impact of racial oppression in their lives. Our skin color defines how we move in the World.

We view race as a racially constructed idea that assigns privilege according to skin color. It impacts our lived experiences and our interactions with others. The way we make sense of those race-based experiences ultimately will impact how much we can ask for, how valuable we think we are, what we think about how others treat us, how we make sense of our world... These race-influenced dynamics are

bound to pe*****te the boundaries of a safe home and affect the most loving of relationships. At the Multiracial Family Project we aim to help families of mix racial background give voice to these experiences, heal and generate new meaning that can bring them closer together.

Our Story

We view race as a racially constructed idea that assigns privilege according to skin color. Our skin color defines how we move in the World. The closer one is to whiteness, the more privilege one is afforded. Therefore, race impacts our lived experiences with people and institutions, and our interactions with others, including our loved ones. The way we make sense of those race-based experiences ultimately will impact how we use our voice, and what and how we ask for. Whether we want it or not, race-influenced dynamics are bound to pe*****te the boundaries of a safe home and affect the most loving of our relationships. As a society that has little practice in holding space for loving conversations about race, families may feel lost on how to go about clarifying these dynamics. At times, they may even be unaware of how race is operating. At the Multiracial Family Project, we aim to help couples and families of different and mix racial backgrounds explore and give voice to these experiences, find ways to heal together, and generate new meaning that can bring them even closer.
