Big news for the ALS community in our region. The ALS Clinic at Hackensack University Medical Center has been named an ALS Center of Excellence. This designation recognizes the clinic's proactive focus on continuous improvement and the deep expertise across its care team.

A huge thank you to Galita Leiderman, who six years ago started the Mike Leiderman Cup in memory of her husband, Mike, who passed away from ALS in 2018, raising money for ALS United Greater New York. The Leiderman Cup brings together top high school seniors from Long Island and NYC for a charity All-Star game honoring Mike's legacy as founder of the Long Island Storm and his work with The Atlantic Group. 1996 World Series champion Jim Leyritz of the New York Yankees kicked things off with a ceremonial first pitch to David Leiderman, and spoke to both teams prior to the game. It's National Nonprofit Day, a great reminder of why local nonprofits matter. For over 30 years, ALS United Greater New York has shown up for people living with ALS right here in our community. Having a local presence means we know the local resources, the local doctors, the local support systems that actually make a difference in someone's day.
Every year, we serve over 1,200 people living with ALS and their families with:

✅ Access to assistive equipment and technology
✅ Advocacy that amplifies our community's needs
✅ Support of groundbreaking research

We are saddened by the passing of Tommy John, legendary MLB pitcher and longtime friend to the ALS community, who died Saturday at age 83.

Tommy became an Honorary Board Member of ALS United Greater New York, was recognized at the 8th Annual Lou Gehrig Sports Award Benefit in October 2002, and was a familiar face at our Walks over the years. Tommy's connection to ALS began through his friendship with fellow pitcher Catfish Hunter, whose battle with and passing from the disease became the focus of Tommy's philanthropic work.

Baseball fans know Tommy as one of the game's greatest left-handers, and for defying the odds after his 1974 reconstructive elbow surgery, a procedure by Dr. Frank Jobe that now carries his name: Tommy John Surgery.

His generosity extended to his family too. His son sang the national anthem at our Gala, a moment our community still remembers warmly. We're grateful for Tommy's years of friendship and support, and our thoughts are with his family.

It's a full circle of support — regular home visits from a Regional Social Worker, assistive technology like eye gaze devices, help navigating accessibility needs like home lifts, mental health support, and connections to trusted clinical teams. Ellen Z., recently diagnosed with bulbar ALS, shared this: "I cannot express my gratitude enough for the wonderful work of ALS United. If it wasn't for the outstanding work, support, and compassion of this community, I seriously don't know where I would be today. Nothing seems too hard or too tough — the response to any problem or emotional challenge is always: we can figure that out and get someone in the field to help."

Thank you to New York Rep. Tom Suozzi for cosponsoring the ACT for ALS Reauthorization Act and supporting people living with ALS, caregivers, and families across the country. The ALS community cannot afford to lose momentum. Reauthorizing the ACT for ALS helps sustain progress in care, research, and access to investigational therapies. The work isn’t finished yet. Because the House and Senate passed different versions of the bill, Congress will need to resolve those differences when lawmakers return in September before the legislation can be sent to the President. Therapeutic development increasingly means following the biology — whether that's targeting one of the 40+ genes implicated in rare genetic forms of ALS, or pursuing biology like TDP-43 dysfunction, found in most ALS cases, which could inform therapies for a broader population. Either way, the goal is the same: understand the biology well enough to know who a therapy is most likely to help. A huge thank you to Galita Leiderman, who started this event six years ago in memory of her husband, Mike, who passed away from ALS. Her dedication doesn't stop there — she and her children lead Team Mike Leiderman every year at the ALS Walk Long Island, keeping his memory alive and raising critical support for the ALS community.
This year's Summer Baseball Classic takes place August 14 at Mitchell Field in Uniondale, L.I., featuring the storied NYC vs. Long Island matchup with top players from across the New York area. Team Long Island currently leads the series 3-2, so this promises to be a great game to watch.
The Cup is proudly co-sponsored by the Greater New York Sandlot Athletic Alliance and Axcess Baseball, with thanks to Molloy University Baseball for hosting us on their field.
