Byer talks RENT with Tracie Thoms

Nicole: I love RENT in a way that might be sick. I had THE Joanne aka Tracie Thoms on my podcast, so I had to confess my fandom. What an absolute dream!! Where are my Rentheads at?

Both scenes get me every time. And it’s not coincidence.

RENT turned 30 this year. After performing in seven productions (including the 20th Anniversary tour that was somehow a decade ago 😳) and six years inside , the parallels are too specific to ignore.

Lin-Manuel has talked openly about being shaped by Sondheim and Jonathan Larson, and you can feel Larson’s fingerprints all over Hamilton especially in how both shows handle their Act II tragedies.

The staging, the stillness, the songs

Devastated to hear of the passing of Jason Collins, who made history when he came out in 2013 and then became the first out gay athlete to play in any of the four major North American pro sports leagues. "When I chose to come out, there was no scandal or anything," Collins told ESPN in November. "This was like, I feel that I am good enough to play in the NBA and by the way, I'm gay. Just so everyone knows cards on the table, this is where I am.” "We are heartbroken to share that Jason Collins, our beloved husband, son, brother and uncle, has died after a valiant fight with glioblastoma," his family said in a statement released by the NBA. "Jason changed lives in unexpected ways and was an inspiration to all who knew him and to those who admired him from afar. We are grateful for the outpouring of love and prayers over the past eight months and for the exceptional medical care Jason received from his doctors and nurses. Our family will miss him dearly." Our hearts are with everyone who knew and loved him.
