Located at 58 Park Avenue at 38th St., NYC. Support ASF here: https://go.amscan.org/Donations Established in 1911 by Danish-American industrialist Niels Poulson and a group of other forward-thinking leaders from business and education, the American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) was the first international non-governmental society to have as its sole purpose the development of goodwill through educ

ational and cultural exchange. It was designed to meet the needs of its time through fellowships, scholarly exchange, exhibitions, and publications. These programs have grown over the years, and along with the cultural programs at Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America, have provided a comprehensive platform for ongoing international exchange between the United States and the Nordic countries. This international work is at the heart of the Foundation’s mission. Each year, ASF awards over $800,000 in fellowships and grants to individual students, scholars, professionals, and artists for study and research in the United States and abroad. To date, some 30,000 Americans and Scandinavians have participated in these and other ASF programs of study, research, or practical training. In October 2000, ASF opened Scandinavia House as a showplace for Nordic culture and life. Since its founding, it has welcomed over 1.5 million visitors, who have come to enjoy exhibitions, performances, lectures, and more. Scandinavia House was financed by the generosity of more than 300 donors from the U.S. and abroad, including individuals, corporations, and foundations, as well as the Nordic governments and the Nordic Council of Ministers. Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America, the leading center for Nordic culture in the United States, offers a wide range of programs that illuminate the culture and vitality of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Scandinavia House offerings include diverse exhibitions and film series, as well as concerts and other performances, readings, lectures, symposia, language courses, and children’s activities. Designed by the internationally renowned Polshek Partnership Architects (now Ennead Architects) and inaugurated in October 2000, Scandinavia House is the headquarters of the American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) and the site of ASF’s cultural and educational programming.

Join Scandinavia House and the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York (The Finnish Cultural Institute in New York | FCINY) on June 23 for an immersive evening with Finnish artist, researcher, and hypnotherapist Aapo Nikkanen! Nikkanen will be joined by composer and longtime collaborator Raudie McLeod to discuss their unique artistic practices and present their work through a group hypnosis session.

In their hypnotic works, Nikkanen and McLeod have guests visit speculative realities through hypnosis. Their practice addresses how contemporary systems increasingly operate at the level of cognition, shaping how we interpret, trust, and respond to the world.

Curious to see how this works in practice? RSVP through the link in our bio! Please note: this event is for audiences 18+. Late entry will not be permitted.

In celebration of Scandinavia House’s 25th anniversary, SATC is proud to present a staged reading of "In Our Place" by acclaimed Norwegian playwright Arne Lygre! The reading will feature special guest actor Rakel Benér Gajdusek, who has worked regularly at Dramaten (The Royal Dramatic Theatre) in Stockholm since 2015.

Astrid has shared a long and intimate friendship with Eva—a bond that has shaped them both. But when Astrid meets Sara, a fragile new connection begins to form, challenging the boundaries of their worlds. Who can they be to one another? Is it possible for them to hold a greater and more meaningful place in each other’s lives? In Our Place is a piercing exploration of the human need for connection: our desire to be seen, to hold space for one another, and to find our own identities reflected in the eyes of others. Beneath its delicate surface lies a quiet, universal fear: the dread of being left out, of being replaceable, and of ultimately ending up alone.

SATC has a long-standing history with Lygre’s work. In 2013, SATC produced a staged reading of his play "Then Silence" at Scandinavia House, which successfully developed into a full Off-Broadway production at Theatre Row in 2016. SATC is thrilled to bring Lygre’s latest powerful work to audiences in honor of Scandinavia House's 25th Anniversary. RSVP at the link in our bio!

““The best kind of straight-faced absurdism”—this Wednesday, June 10, see Mads Mikkelsen and Nikolaj Lie Kaas in the outrageous black comedy The Last Viking from Danish director Anders Thomas Jensen!

In a last-ditch effort to save a bank heist gone wrong, Anker (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) leaves the loot with his brother Manfred (Mads Mikkelsen) and asks him to hide it until he gets out of prison. Fifteen years later, Anker is ready to collect, but in the intervening time, Manfred has suffered a mental breakdown, forgotten where he hid the money and, to boot—thinks he is John Lennon. Hoping to jog his memory, Anker takes Manfred back to their childhood home, but he starts to lose hope when they are joined by Manfred’s eccentric doctor and two of his psychiatric patients. When criminals come looking for Anker and the cash, the two misfit brothers will have to band together if they want to make it out alive.

In THE LAST VIKING, Jensen spins “a perceptive take on men’s mental health” (Film Threat) with bizarre characters, a twist of genres, and “positive affirmation masked as a Beatles song.” Get your tickets at our bio link!
