Many of you asked about the visitors and commotion on the corridor last week. It was a celebration! Pitkin Avenue just received NYC’s first green‑roof bus shelter to help manage heavy rainfall and cool the street during hotter months.

About 70% of residents in our community ride the bus, yet the neighborhood has only 19% tree canopy. For our active seniors and young people with chronic illnesses, this pilot is a first step toward beautifying the neighborhood and prioritizing climate resilience and health.

We often ask why neighborhoods like Brownsville are last to receive resources. This time we changed the narrative. Though a pilot, this is the start of real change. We’re grateful to Resilient Cities Catalyst for the funding of this pilot , and Mayor’s Office of Climate & Environmental Justice NYC DOT for supporting this project.

Join us today at 3pm in Zion Triangle for the official community tour to see all of the wonderful projects including our tree guard bench in celebration of Climate Week! 🥳🪴

The Pitkin Ave BID and its Board of Directors would like to send our warmth and sincere condolences to the Hon. Council Member Darlene Mealy and the entire family. Today’s homegoing celebration for your mother was a reflection of the work you do every day in the community. Ms. Mealy was a true embodiment of service and of God.
We keep you all in our prayers🙏🏽
