historical significance of what the very 1st Mars One Candidates represent and what they have achieved. The Mars One opportunity was presented at a time when most people saw the colonizing of Mars as some far off, distant, future event...while others accused it of even being a scam. Yet, when the time came, and this seemingly impossible opportunity was first placed on the table...over two hundred thousand people applied. True "Marsoneers"...these people made public their desire to follow their dreams in the face of ridicule and persecution, and even more...they faced the fear of their efforts being completely ignored. Of these more than two hundred thousand applicants, less than 1000 remain as candidates. These exceptional individuals were selected in the first round ever - to select and train astronauts for the colonization of another world. They alone, have bravely moved on to face the challenges of ROUND 2. These fearless souls are the ORIGINAL Mars One Candidates. There is only one "First-Time" ...and the history books cannot erase these events. Those candidates who are finally selected can be compared to the original Mercury 7 Astronauts except for this; Mars One is a much grander mission. In the wake of this earliest campaign to "take the next giant leap for mankind," the whole world is now beginning to open their eyes and realize that not only is this a "possible" dream...it is a juggernaut that cannot be stopped. Now, with open eyes and open minds, so many more will attempt to apply for this mission in the future.
