🎙️ Miss Immigrant USA welcomed Romero
candidate for New York State Assembly District 34, to the WISE Immigrants Podcast for a powerful conversation about immigrant identity, housing, public service, and belonging.

🇨🇴 Brian shared his personal story as the son of Colombian immigrants from Bogotá.

🏠 He spoke about growing up in East Elmhurst, living in a basement apartment, experiencing homelessness as a child, and how those early experiences shaped his understanding of dignity, safety, housing, and public service.

🤝 Before entering politics, Brian worked as a social worker in immigrant communities, communities of color, low-income communities, mental health, child welfare, foster care, schools, and the criminal justice system.

💬 In our conversation, he explained how seeing systemic gaps pushed him toward public service.

🌎 This episode also touches on fear in immigrant communities, ICE presence, healthcare access, food insecurity, LGBTQ identity, and the idea of Queens as “the world’s borough.”

Today we are sharing a powerful conversation with Yurina Gil, a Cuban immigrant, CPA, and candidate for Congress in Florida’s District 26.

🇨🇺 Yurina came to the United States from Cuba at 18.
🏙️ At 19, she stayed in Miami on her own.
💼 She built her career through education, work, and resilience.
🗳️ Now she is facing one of the hardest parts of democracy: getting on the ballot.

In this interview, Yurina speaks openly about the cost of running for office, the lack of support many women candidates face, and why ballot access matters before voters ever get to Election Day.

She also shares a beautiful reflection on immigrant identity — describing herself like a multi-layer cake, with Cuban roots, American life, and many cultural layers added through experience.
